New York City split into 52 wards of equal population for a project I'm working on. I could use some help on naming them though. Any suggestions?

First of all, there was no guarantee that Amazon would fulfill the numbers quoted in this deal everyone is crying about. Do you know how frequently governments get fucked in handshake deals like this?

Second, I'd bet they'll end up increasing those numbers beyond 1500 fairly quickly. NYC had a lot of talent and it draws people from all over the world already.

I don't know what everyone is so upset about. Just let the market work, if there's a need, they'll fill it, if not, who cares? Those jobs could all be gone if the economy turns or if Amazon begins to have its own troubles.

Meh, I think it’s fine. I didn’t agree with driving amazon off, but them continuing to expand without the city needing to give subsidies is still a win and she can tweet about it. It’s hardly the tv advertisement blitz most politicians do. It’s also a small win. I don’t mind. Let her have it, she might in the end be right- the talent is here. Friends who work at amazon say they actually have a hard time pulling talent because people would rather work somewhere cooler. Not being in NYC would make that even harder.

  • richraid21
    18 points Dec 07,2019, 10:39am

So just to be clear, we're celebrating the fact that NYC gave up $27 billion in tax revenue in order to not give $3 billion in incentives.

Now we are pretending to be high IQ because AWS in moving into Hudson Yards, which received more tax breaks over the lifetime of the project than AWS was ever even asking for? And it's good?

She sounds like the left version of Trump, when she twists the facts to suit her narrative. Amazon already has office spaces in Manhattan. They simply expanded that. These are high paying executives and tech jobs - which will be fulfilled by candidates from around the world. This is a drop in the ocean compared to the number of jobs HQ would have brought in.

Now, I’m against those incentives promised for Amazon, but I hate it when a person in power make statements, where they quite simply assume the electorate is dumb enough to gobble up the dross they put out.

I honestly don't agree with the social climate of New York itself anymore. This isn't the place I grew up in. Hasn't been for a long time.

Life is way easier and the real estate so much cheaper in other regions of the county. Only real tradeoff is the ignorance you deal with. But now that the ignorance has been creeping into NY for years, there's little difference socially. People are actually way friendlier elsewhere.

This is some Trump-level self-congratulatory bullshit. People, please stop shooting yourselves in the foot and promoting this as some sort of victory. Instead of 25,000 high paying jobs, we're getting 1,500. That's 23,500 less $200k+ incomes we can tax. That's 23,500 less deals real estate agents can make when they need to find these people places to live. (Those fees also get taxed). That's 23,500 less people eating out at restaurants (and paying taxes on their meals, and tipping their servers), 23,500 less people getting their garments dry cleaned (and taxed). 23,500 less monthly metro cards every month (which brings much needed revenue to the MTA). Yes, rent might go up, but that's also more revenue for landlords, which is also taxed. Whether you like it or not, you need businesses to have an economy, and help a city function. Amazon wanted a bulk discount on bringing 25,000 high paying jobs to the city, just like you as a consumer would want a deal if they spend a lot of money at a business. I know this may be difficult to grasp, but this is not the victory you think it is.

This is really embarrassing. She’s so stupid. She's bragging about Amazon expanding headcount in Manhattan by 1500 after losing a new 25000+ employee campus in Queens? Amazon is expanding throughout the nation, so this isn’t special. The HQ2 in Queens would have been something entirely different.

No shortage of high paying corporate jobs in NYC for the well educated, or ivy leaguers. The warehouse jobs are a different story altogether.

  • langenoirx
    -11 points Dec 07,2019, 8:35am

In other shocking news, AOC says something stupid, again.

"“Won’t you look at that: Amazon is coming to NYC anyway - *without* requiring the public to finance shady deals, helipad handouts for Jeff Bezos, & corporate giveaways,” she tweeted."

Amazon WAS ALREADY in NYC. An estimated 8,000 people were working in offices they ALREADY HAD offices in NYC. The deal was for their 2nd Headquarters which WE ARE NOT GETTING.

1,500 net new jobs does not 25,000 net new jobs.

So no Amazon didn't cave. They're just adding additional workforce for the demand that is already here.

AOC is as retarded as most NYC voters.

Amazon already had multiple offices in NYC and hiring in the city would continue to expand with their business growth (old news). What will not happen is a second headquarters with some 25 thousand employees.

Also telling is that the company is looking for office space in Hudson Yards, an area that saw bigger tax incentives and government investment than the LIC project would have received.

And the NY Times article titled "Amazon’s Tax Breaks and Incentives Were Big. Hudson Yards’ Are Bigger."

Too bad AOC was not around to kill the Hudson Yards development, just like she helped kill the LIC one.

I am as Democratic as can be and the sight of this imbecile makes me nauseous. I can not believe we lost Joe Crowley for this dumbass.

  • Elan40

  • GeorgePapadopoulos
    -3 points Dec 07,2019, 11:05am

Reminder that this dumb cunt thought that the tax breaks that were to given to amazon was cash on hand that was to be given to them. She fucking thought we were going to give them billions in cash and when she lost the 25000 jobs she said the cash could be given to schools. She’s a fucking moron

Rules like this get implemented when the people living there abuse the services. In my building we have a lot of people who own apartments, but this is their NYC apartment so they have months of packages stacked in the storage room. This is why we can't have nice things.

  • Cimarroncita
    46 points Dec 05,2019, 8:27am

Well its Holiday rush and they only have a limited space for packages, they obviously don't want packages overflowing everywhere

  • pfthrowaway21315
    19 points Dec 05,2019, 9:44am

My building has had to be forceful with some tenants who order big shit, but don’t pick them up in a timely manner. I’ve had tires and ACs delivered, but I always pick them up the same day.

Honestly, in my 25+ years of experience living in a doorman building, I’ve found that if you’re cool, they’ll let shit slide. If I was expecting a big package in your building, I’d come to them ahead of time, tell them that you’ll pick it up the same day, and slip them a $10. Most building staff will bend the rules if they’re taken care of.

  • iammaxhailme

2 foot wide by 5 feet tall is pretty large, I think this is a reasonable rule.

  • codewench
    8 points Dec 05,2019, 11:04am

Also worth noting, the notice refers to a 'security guard', which is a very different role than 'doorman'. I suspect holding packages isn't actually in the job description for a guard, and is just the guy being nice.

  • nim_opet
    19 points Dec 05,2019, 8:41am

Yes. Package holding is a favor, they don’t have to accept them unconditionally

  • Chav
    2 points Dec 05,2019, 10:22am

If the tree is in a box it would probably be accepted. Loose trees I would see why they wouldn't. Those things take up a lot of space. My Doormen will take just about anything, but I wouldnt order a tree for them to hold.

  • Spin_Me
    2 points Dec 05,2019, 10:56am

It's reasonable, IMO, although the 24'x5' rule seems arbitrary. In my 20 years of living in a doorman building, i have never accepted delivery of anything 5 feet long/high via the doorman.

  • ejpusa

if the car is a total wreck like in this picture and you said they is other damage, most likely the issue is finding a tow company willing to accept the risk for towing the car. They could be issues with towing cars with pre-existing damage, like the owner of the car could say that the tow truck damage the car and so on which could cause issues.

maybe you talk to your local officials like the council member about this?

It's getting more and more faded every time they pull the board attatched in front of it.

Here's what it originally looked like

Many people don't know it had a brother on the North end of the block too. That's right, Jerry Springer debuted from the same production company, at nearly the same time.
