Summer in NYC in a nutshell...(all from today, August 18)

This summer has actually been relatively mild by NYC standards -- by "mild" I mean enough days with dewpoints below 65 and temps below 85 to be tolerable. Although the next four days look likely to be pretty miserably warm and muggy.

Bring on our two weeks of Fall!

So high/mid 80s and rain? Doesn't seem very unusual for NYC to be honest.

Flash from the past. I remember going there as a kid. Friend of the family let me go and told me I could get any one toy. I got one of them toys that makes creepy candy.

From Wikipedia: "FAO Schwarz is the oldest toy store in the United States, first opening its doors in 1862 in Baltimore before moving to New York City, where it has moved between several locations since 1870."

There used to be more of these especially in outer boroughs. They make good pets if you don't mind bugs. Watching them eat with a magnifying glass is like watching an alien monster devour something.

edit: never saw one on a train though that poor thing is LOST =(

Less than three months since the start of its test run, the new fare payment system OMNY has hit its one millionth tap

If I didn't have an unlimited monthly metrocard i'd be happy to use the new system. Glad to see it's performing so well

  • NukeBushwick
    12 points Aug 13,2019, 4:02pm

I'll be excited for OMNY when unlimited fares are an option. Until then, we're still in the blue Metrocard era.

  • redct
    2 points Aug 13,2019, 2:06pm

Top 5 countries are interesting. Both Britain and Canada have widespread adoption of contactless cards (NFC in the card), a lot more than digital wallets. A lot of people in London use contactless cards instead of transit cards to gain access to the tube, for instance.

  • virtual_adam
    1 points Aug 13,2019, 3:23pm

it makes a lot more sense once they took away metrocard bonuses.

If you don't need a connecting bus its much easier to tap your phone than keep refilling a card

  • IvoShandor
    1 points Aug 13,2019, 6:41pm

I use easypay express and have unlimited monthly reloaded automatically. This is useless to me, no? It’s just pay-per-ride?

  • Reddit-october
    -5 points Aug 13,2019, 11:53am

Guess I'll be a late adopter -- I'll tap when they give me a private (cash pay) card, so I'm waiting till late 2020.

It’s a good system. Use it whenever I can. Tap phone and go. Takes less than half a second and doesn’t tell me to swipe again.
