I lived in NYC from 2006 to 2017. Manitoba's was one of my go-to bars in the city. My friends and I would pop in after weekend record shopping at Gimme Gimme or A-1, or before a concert at Otto's or the LES. In 2013 I had my first date with my now-wife at Manitoba's. In 2017, my family moved to St Louis. I commissioned this piece from Ryan Thomas Monahan and to me it serves as a wonderful reminder to the city I love and the time that I spent there.

This explains so much about the condition of the sidewalks.
Fun fact, it's 12 degrees outside, but 92 degrees inside.
Someone draw the bottom half!
I hate love this city so much
Some pig lets. Their dog shit in the stairwell here
so THAT's what michael jackson was doing a 15 years ago
Picture to be found inside a lost locket, stolen from my apartment during a fire after firefighters and Red Cross went through. Around 10 years ago. A police report did nothing. But the kind of person to steal a locket of invaluable sentiment for its relatively small street value is the scum of the earth. Wouldn’t it be a miracle if it resurfaced.
I love the “where culture goes to die” considering that Times Square is located in the middle of the #1 theatre district in the world. But you know, whatever.
I thought where culture goes to die is Williamsburg
It would be funnier if Monday.com wasn’t such a piece of shit.
Where fat, white, geriatric midwestern tourists pay money to talk with Elmo and eat Sabarro pizza.
Use the PDF which contains vector graphics. Normal images (PNG/JPG/etc) won't become clearer as you zoom in because they're just pictures saved as some pixels.
You are on set it looks like, judging by the reflections?
Blizzard of 1996. The MTA signage suggests later than the 1980s and the old Dr Jay’s sign is from the 1990s. My take at least...
When it was snowing
Not sure this is helpful, but if this is the same Smith's, it closed in 2014 and was around for 60 years. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/31/nyregion/smiths-bar-closing-in-times-square.html
My parents have the same one and I've always loved it! I believe it's like a search and find. The wording around the edges are the places you're supposed to find in the picture, but I've never done it.
Any idea where I can find a reprint?
Edit: did a simple google search. $275-$350. Yowzers.
it's actually a nice poster. I like the way central park has been rendered. could be a tapestry.
The entire known world all in one poster
Love it! Also love to see that my Cousin’s old restaurant is on there! What year was this printed? 70s?
So much detail. So little space. Just like the real NYC.
That would be one hell of a jigsaw puzzle.
My boss has an original print hanging in the office, uncolored. 156 of 200. Try to find the flasher!
Manhattan!! So nice they exclaimed it twice.
i’ve always loved this illustration. so many memories of the city as i knew it in my childhood and landmarks that no longer exist.
This is awesome. I’m looking at the prices, which aren’t so awesome. I see that he also did one of Broadway. I love stuff like this.
Stops at Harlem. Classic white privilege.
Wait... Where the hell is the 2nd Statue of Liberty?
Why have South Bronx when you can have "SoBro by the Harlem River".
What I don't get is Chelsea (which is what SoHY would be) has been a nice neighborhood for quite some time now. Why rebrand it?
Almost as posh as DoWiSeTrePla
We already have a name for SoHY. It's called West Chelsea. Source: I live there.
The funniest one was when they tried to rename Hell's Kitchen to MiMa. Seriously, who doesn't want to live in a neighborhood named "Hell's Kitchen." That's some cool shit right there. That and you know you got Daredevil and The Punisher looking out for you?
Yeah, MiMa can go fuck itself along with SoHY.
Just wait until legalization...
The worst I've seen is MiMa for Midtown Manhattan.
Isnt that ryan serhants company from million dollar listing?
Instead of making up neighborhood names, why not change the past connotations and reputations of those neighborhoods? If you're renaming a neighborhood, go for something historical. Name them after historical figures associated with the area or Native American names or something. Just throwing my (dumb) thoughts.
I looked at their prices ... who the fuck can afford to live there? There is like $6k in monthly common charges and real estate taxes alone. The condo price is over $3mil.
But it's great marketing. It got you to share it.
SoPA, South of Port Authority
OP, What kind of boots are those?
Isn't that just Chelsea?
Also get this marketing BS out of here.
Jesus. This is one of the most infuriating things I've seen in a while and props to OP for the effective rage induction. "NYC Developer Faux-Neighborhood" is perfect. Seeing the area around 117th and Frederick Douglas where I used to live advertised as "SoHa" made me want to start welding shut every door to every douchey real estate office I walked by.
Do they make any effort to say this shit out loud before deciding to print it? Who can actually say "I live in SoHy" with a straight face?
Eventually the whole city is just going to made up of neighborhoods that sound like some weird Japanese-Portuguese amalgam. "I had lunch in NoLIta, walked west to SoHo and then decided to stroll through TriBeCa. My friends just got to SoBro after getting tired of the prices in SoHY and realized they couldn't raise a kid in FiDi."
Every area already has a name. Whichever PR firm is coming up with these is lazy and it isn't convincing anyone to move there. The only people putting money into these is foreign criminals anyway. Why brand it?
So it's this easy to get a job in high-end copywriting and marketing, then? Where do I apply?
Why are they allowed to affix stickers to public sidewalks?
Next hipster that says south slope is getting backhanded.
SoBoBeLoHobo" (South of West Houston, Below lower Hoboken)
Also seriously, why rename a slice of Chelsea? Chelsea already has a fuckton of cachet, you're probably doing more harm than good not just saying "IT'S IN CHELSEA"
I am SoHY right now...
What kind of shoes ya got?
Reminds me of DoBro (Downtown Brooklyn). Sigh...
SoHY is what they were when they thought up this bullshit.
Well, I like your shoes
Yo this is the worst haha
Mine is SoGy.
South of the Graveyard.
Hudson Yards North (you mean Hells Kitchen?)
Hudson Yards in general have all been grinding my gears lately.
Lol Hudson Yards is barely a neighborhood as it is.
Bunch of emasculated SoHYboys over on the west side these days.
My fave is JOHN TESH
Just Over Hudson Near The Escape Steam Hatch
Someone should file a 311 complaint for littering. Fuck those guys trying to advertise by polluting the sidewalks.
They've started trying to brand my neighborhood as SoHa (for south Harlem) and it gets me really fucking tight
BoCoCa is easily the worst of them all (Boerum Hill - Cobble Hill - Carroll Gardens). Now that Gowanus is up and coming, I'm trying to see how the realtors will incorporate it into the portmanteau.
video by the realtor (Ryan Serhant) explaining SoHY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdCCj6St64c
Seriously? Not only are these SoHo knockoffs, but also seem like they were conceived by Trump. (Judging by the quality and vocabulary used in these acronyms)
This reminds me of my cousins BF who argued with me because we live blocks away from each other and he says Bushwick and I say Ridgewood..because it's Ridgewood, we literally have the same voting district and his mail says Flushing just like mine. (don't know why this happens but its very common in Ridgewood.)
He just wants to say Bushwick. ppl can be so lame.
I like "SoPA" South of Port Authority.
Bro. Bro I'm SoHY right now. So-fuckin-HY.
Oh for fucksake
Pour paint on every single fucking one
What if I were to tell you... SoHo and TriBeCa are made up too. SoHo by a real estate developer and TriBeCa was the result of a zoning dispute court case misinterpreted by a newspaper reporter?
And also... who the fuck cares what they call a neighborhood? If I lived there and told friends/family I live in SoHY... they wouldn't have a fucking clue. So it doesn't matter.
All neighborhood names are ultimately made up by people. As more people move into a new area, there is more reason to distinguish one portion of that area from other parts of what was previously called the a singular neighborhood. Take LIC for example, it's considered one neighborhood, but you'd have a very different living experience in one versus another. It would make sense to differentiate them with different names.
I really don't know if "SoHY" would fit that bill, but so many other NYers react to new names rather close-mindedly IMO, as exemplified by this thread.
You've gotta be SoHYgh to think that's a good idea
Sounds expensive, move to EHAR and save
Oh fuck off with that shit!
how the fuck do you even pronounce that.
My favorite was when developers tried to call parts of Flatbush "Park Heights".
Im SoHY right now
Jesus fuckin christ. The nerve of those pieces of shit.
Don't you usually take the first two letters of every word, though? Shouldn't it be SoHuYa?
Holy Bananas !!!!
Does “Hudson Heights” qualify?
Just move to SoDoSoPa, then you're living in luxury.
I live in North Kensington (Ocean Pkwy + Church Ave) and mockingly call it NorKen. I could totally make it a thing If I tried.
Investing heavily in TriBeRILGA
I've been living here for a long ass time and I have no idea what the fuck the Hudson Yards even are.
This isnt Crown Heights, its East Park Slope.
I saw a sign for WeWork in Dumbo calling it “ Dumbo Heights”. STFU 🙄
SoDoSoPa, CtPaTown, NoMoAuchie, when will it end??
For fuck's where do they find the tools that come up with this cheesy shit?
In Brooklyn, we have BoCoCa. I thought it was a joke (it is, really) but I've seen it on maps or ads.
I live in Carroll Gardens. Or, as real estate brokers like to call it, "SoDUMBO". ;-)
How is it a faux neighborhood?
I’m on the border of Bushwick and Ridgewood
Why would someone do this? Is Kensington, south of Windsor Terrace, going to be renamed SOWiTe?
I have commuted for about 5 years from North Brooklyn to the Bronx. Every year there is a new sign with a new slogan trying to convince people to move there and that it's hip. It's just amazing how they never stop, they just keep trying to change the slogan
I'm SoHY right now
Move to Soy!
Soho is ok because it's old? It was new once.
So Dumb. Bad marketing for shitty realestate agents.
Ugh. Remember when realtors tried to make “ProCro” a thing?
It's like the bar rescue when they named the bar in yonkers "soyo"
They must be so-high
Can someone explain why Queens has been exempt from the renaming of Neighborhoods... and while you’re at it please tell me why we say Queens, but never write it. (Thanks)
I'm partial to NoHa myself.
Is every damn neighborhood gonna have some two syllable name now?
I agree, with the exception of Ridgewood not being a part of Brooklyn.
That section you call Ridgewood but everyone calls it Bushwick is spot on.
Had to include your boots
Someone stop this shit.
What's wrong with Chelsea?
So High. you can smoke meth in these condos! yes, please fuck off marketers.
Kind of a clever play on words. (imho)
I love in SoSpaHa - south of Spanish Harlem.
CraPennSta - crap around penn station
How frequently does the train stop during rush hour? I'm surprised they aren't just running a shuttle between to next closest station. 15 minutes seems awfully long.
You thought by enhanced they meant regularly scheduled busses that will get you where you need to be without adding time to your usual route? On Jamaica Ave? With 10 billion traffic lights? On a Monday?
Was just over that way Saturday and it looked like the whole station was up on stilts. I think the street under that station between 113th st and 112th st is the darkest "under the el" par of the city. House are right next to the tracks
Enhanced with USB charging and LED lighting.
Here's a question nobody seems to have asked so far: Why exactly has it closed, and why on such short notice?
Is its structural integrity really in so much doubt? If so, that's a really big problem.
I mean, you're getting 30 second headways, that's pretty damn good. They're just not where you are.
It looks like they tied the buses together to create a train! 😂😂😂
inb4 bus bunching apologist.
"Enhanced" means they washed the blood and vomit off the floor and fished the miscarrage out of the toilet tank. Enjoy!
A sign that you should take the Q37.
this is new york.
And the worst thing is that the first bus will be fucking packed because the crowds have been building up. The same crap happens on my regular route (m100/m101)... no buses for 20 minutes, then three all at once
If the buses are that close together that they are all 15-16 minutes away, that means they have bunched up with delays. At least one of those buses should have arrived at your location so far.
