Do all carhartt jackets/coats stick out the back like this?

Most carhartt items don’t fit me. I’m tall and slight and I find carhartt to be either too short or too wide for me to wear.

  • 10sharks

So no idea, but that coat is at least two sizes too big for its wearer

get one with the elastic on the bottom to keep it tight. always buy a size down in Carhartt sweatshirts and coats as well, they seem to be tailored to larger folk. I'm 6' and 220 and I buy a size down otherwise I'm swimming in it.

I've copped 2 vintage ones at this point and they both stick out the back. Idk why, is there a way to fix it e.g. what measurements should I be paying close attention to or can they be tailored? Appreciate any help

Regular USA Carhartt work jackets do yeh, its proper workwear and so they deliberately have extra pleated back and shoulder so the wearer can move around more easily and the jacket can go over the top of other clothes like thick hoodies, overalls etc. The fabric is also dense and rigid so they hold that 'puffy' shape more than usual.

Carhartt WIP (work in progress) is a European version of the brand and the WIP jackets are mostly all cut differently in slim-fit fashion patterns. So they have similar fabrics and all the look of workwear but nicer slim fit. Downside is Carhartt WIP is more expensive than regular USA Carhartt.

You pretty much can't get them out of suede. Try hitting them with dish soap and water on a cloth for a few minutes and see if it lessens it.

Hands soap in gel with some water and a tooth brush. Doesn't matter if it's a red or green soap, it's gonna do foam and be away with some water. It's worked with a lot of shirts.

You don't, unfortunately. I tried cleaning mine (had identical stains after a rain storm) with everything I could find under the sun - no dice. BUT I can recommend the shoes I wear as substitutes: New Balance 791s. Basically identical shoes without the suede so you can actually wear them outside more than twice ever before they're ruined (I'm salty).

Ordered 4 Pairs of Bonobos Chinos In the Same Size Recently...

Clothes Make The Man

COMMENTS

  • setfiretoflames
    1 points Jul 23,2019, 2:22pm

Mod note: I would be hesitant to say this is because of the Walmart acquisition. Bonobos QC has always been awful, and the main thing that saved them was the easy return process.

The QC is one of the reasons I don’t buy from them anymore. Enjoy this picture of the other reason I don’t.

  • IWasRightOnce
    543 points Jul 23,2019, 12:27pm

I see your Bonobos QC and raise you Banana Republic QC

Both the same size/pair of pants, but the light grey pair was massively baggier and longer than the dark blue

  • turns31
    94 points Jul 23,2019, 12:44pm

Seems like my past Levis experiences. I bought 4 different pairs of 33x32 513s in the same color and all 4 were different lengths.

  • mynameisnickromel
    20 points Jul 23,2019, 2:16pm

I mean you have to at least think there's gonna be an acceptable range within a size, whether it be an inch or two, that might be within their qc requirements. Its a little unreasonable to think that you'd get 100% identical articles of clothing, not to mention shrinkage differences among fabric lots or even depending on the age of the material

  • jreddit1994
    10 points Jul 23,2019, 3:20pm

IDK why BONOBOS gets so much praise in this sub, their quality sucks. The fabric just feels super cheap.

  • TootinOnPutin

I've had the same issue with shirts. I bought M and L over time and some M fit like snug M and some fit like L. Some of the L fit like M and some fit like XL. Recently I bought some J Crew tshirts and while it's better, I still have one L shirt that fits like a M and one that fits like XL.

  • Xx_Squall_xX

    Damn, I actually like Bonobos.

  • Renphalos
    2 points Jul 23,2019, 1:20pm

Dealt with this same issue. I had 4/5 out of tolerance, which is 0.5”. The tolerance amount seems comical when you consider the difference in inseams are 2 inches. Ended up keeping two pairs I liked and returned 3 after subsequent exchanges.

  • ScotchAndLeather
    3 points Jul 23,2019, 4:21pm

I think we need a little more info here... there are lots of reasons this could happen:

    • These are different style/cuts with a different rise, so if you've lined up the waist bands, the same inseam may represent a different overall pant length
    • Slimmer vs. looser cuts - slimmer leg openings tend towards being slightly longer to "look" the same length when they're on you (they bunch and pull up more than a loose one)
    • They could be difference fabrics. Clothing is manufactured with shrinkage tolerance built in which is based on the specific fabric, so the "long" ones may end up the same length once they go through the laundry once or twice.
    • It's not a Rolex where tolerances need to be perfect. There is variation in the machinery they use and there are hand-made elements, so tolerances aren't going to be crazy. If that bottom hem is a quarter inch, then you're looking at a roughly half inch off... or, +/- 0.25 inches. If you've got a 32" inseam that's a 5-10% tolerance which doesn't seem crazy for clothing, which is made from a natural product, in multiple manufacturing locations, on many different machines, etc.
  • SelfUnmadeMan
    2 points Jul 23,2019, 3:21pm

Factory labor inevitably produces this kind of variation. If it's within an inch of the measurement you ordered, consider yourself lucky.

There's only one way to get consistent sizing: find a good tailor.

Bonobos has really slumped in my opinion. I had the same thing happen where I bought a new pair of jeans in the same size, style, and fit as a previous pair and they were a good inch shorter. Sent them back to get a different pair which came back longer than my other pair. Sent those back and they would only give me store credit. Finally placed an order last week during the sale and it took them 6 days to ship them out. Customer service "upgraded" me to 3 day shipping instead of 5 days shipping to make up for the 6 days they were late. They claimed to be super backed up, yet increased the sale % despite being a week behind on shipping. Probably won't order from them again.

  • frankum1

I've purchased 10+ pairs of their Chinos, selvedge denim, 100% cotton denim, linen pants, cotton dress pants, lightweight dress pants, and wool dress pants. They all have similar issues. I've asked their CS about it and "we have a 1" variance on length". So I'm assuming their width of waste and thigh probably have similar astronomically high variance.

Same goes for their Daily Grind Dress shirts. Some I can button the neck on, some I can't. Although I almost always blow the elbow's out after about 12 months and a wash every other week (no dryer, iron only).

Work at a retail store every company has a QC margin of error, in mine it's +- 1cm. Also different dyes will interact differently with the fabric causing changes in the feel and even the size. Not defending this company don't really know them, but in retail no two pieces of clothing are exactly the same so it is paramount to always try stuff on.

  • CB200
    1 points Jul 23,2019, 7:51pm

This is from the production side of the world. There's lots of places in the process to introduce distortions to the final dimensions of products. The first place this can happen, and my suspicion here, is in the laying of fabrics before cutting. As fabrics are stored on rolls they can be put on the roll with varying degrees of tension. This tension needs to be relaxed out of the fabric when it's laying waiting to be cut. This is critical for fabrics with stretch. If it's not relaxed completely, the cut panel will shrunk after it's cut.

Based on the photo I'd guess two colors were relaxed completely before cutting and two were not quite there and resulted in shorter inseams vs the other two colors.

Clothing is a hand made product and variations will exist from piece to piece. Tolerance depends on brands don't know what they might have for inseams. I'd be surprised if these fall within Spec. 100% If you're not happy, let them know and see what they can suggest to address what you see.

Mod note: I would be hesitant to say this is because of the Walmart acquisition. Bonobos QC has always been awful, and the main thing that saved them was the easy return process.

  • VoxSenex
    61 points Jul 23,2019, 1:37pm

This was explained to me by someone in the trade once... I’ll try to summarize. Most clothing manufacturers use automated cutting tools. Instead of cutting one pair at a time, they stack a big pile of fabric and chop it. Consequently, there’s some fluctuations from the true pattern as material on the top pulls or gives. Additionally, there’s a contractual allowance for error, on top of sizing that is based in vanity or heaven knows what. Plus, potential for shrink in post assembly laundering. It all boils down to slack quality control.

I had this happen on the waist with Jcrew tech shorts that arrived yesterday. One size fits perfectly. The other would rupture my appendix if i tried to put them on

Old navy is the worst at this. Some of my slim fit pants are actually slim fit while other skins are as big as their loose fit

  • DrKittenMittenz

I have 7 pairs of chinos from Bonobos. Same style, size, and fit. They all fit differently. It's so annoying.

  • zig_anon
    0 points Jul 23,2019, 2:35pm

I have an expensive Bonobos tie on order. It is the color I want but I’m embarrassed by the brand

After putting through the washing machine the colour has badly run on my Veja’s, any advice for remedying this?

The finish used was not meant to be exposed to that level of heat. There may be little you can do; but give a solution of baking soda and warm water a try, being careful not to spread the colouring further.

Never wash trainers in the washing machine.

    1 points Jul 20,2019, 7:49pm

You can also get colour correction liquid that you leave the garmet/footwear to soak.

Had blue stains on my white and black printed tee from a coloured hoodie, left it in the liquid with water to soak and came out with no traces of blue.

It's a holiday. I'm not even out of bed yet!! And when I get out of bed, I'm not gonna put on pants or a shirt!

I have some 'Murica socks, though. Might put those on.

Haha I believe a lot of this sub is Canadian. I'm wearing grey jeans, blue oxford shirt, and RW iron rangers as I sit at my cubicle on this non-holiday.

Edit Chill Americanos. I was commenting on the fact that this post was an hour old with zero comments. I make one innocuous post and boom, everyone's out the woodwork.

My dad gave me these https://imgur.com/a/8AfZMbAblack AE McAllisters a long time ago. He was a shoe sales manager at Nordstrom in the late 80's.

I don't wear them all that often, but I want to see about having them touched up. I don't believe they need to be sent in to AE to be recrafted yet, but the uppers are definitely in need of some TLC. the leather is quite wrinkled and scrunched in certain spots. The current sole is still in good shape.

Should I take these to my local cobbler? He is pretty good at touch ups. Is there anything he can do about the wrinkles?

Also, I just purchased the Walnut St. John's at the SF AE shop 2 days ago. I plan on wearing these shoes and a matching AE belt with this suit for my wedding in 2 months. Pretty fucking excited!!!
