Is that with each person bringing their own planar deck, a shared deck, or the planar map variant?

Probably the best LGS in the Portland area as of right now (R.I.P Time Vault), I may catch ya there this weekend!

2020 MagicFest promo Forest art, by Jonas De Ro

Revealed by Reid Duke over on Twitter. Looks like it's from Kylem, the Battlebond plane. Oddly enough, the actual card has not yet been previewed, but it's probably not going to be a full art, judging by the aspect ratio.

  • Deathavails

  • kaiseresc

its not the same, its just a type of elemental from the Selesnya.

  • Nahgg
    12 points Oct 20,2019, 6:02am

It's quite funny if you think about the fact that they are depictions of the same thing yet have different stat economies. In one set, that elemental was strong enough to beat just about anything, but if you consider it still as an "8/8" for WAR, then the creatures in that set are absolutely massive in the same economy. 5/6 leviathan would be an 10/12, and there'd be 10/6 hexproof crocs and 10/8 zombie hippos.

    Just an entertaining thought.

[Altered Cards] Urza from Legends, as he should have been

  • Popcynical
    13 points Oct 18,2019, 2:32am

The problem is then there’d be a legend in legends that was/is playable and that’s just too much of a suspension of disbelief.

  • Misquargo
    67 points Oct 18,2019, 12:54am

I like it but, shouldn't the second ability be "a Mana Source" instead of "an interrupt"?

  • alastair____

Looks great, is there a template for frames like this?

  • deekaph
    32 points Oct 17,2019, 11:31pm

I don't understand his ability. How can you use a card as if it were in your hand that turn if it's been removed from the game?

  • StarkMaximum
    11 points Oct 18,2019, 8:39am

1/3rd "Oh my gosh nostalgia! Just like when I was a kid!"

1/3rd "Why doesn't Wizards print cards like this anymore? Old cards are so much better!"

1/3rd pedantic nitpicking over an effect not being worded perfectly accurate to how they were written 20+ years ago

Yep, it's an "Old School Alter" thread.

  • Garrickrelentless
    10 points Oct 18,2019, 5:41am

I would format like this, based on a number of cards from the era.

When Urza is brought into play, also put a */* token Construct into play, where * is the number of artifacts you have in play. (The token is treated as both a creature and an artifact.)

{0}: Target untapped artifact you control becomes tapped. Add {U} to your mana pool.

{5}: Shuffle your library, then set the top card aside. You may play that card as if it were in your hand this turn, except do not pay its casting cost. If that card is a land, play it only if you have a land play remaining. If you do not or cannot play the card, it is removed from the game.

  • _Smpls_
    4 points Oct 18,2019, 12:53am

Urza says that you can “use” the card without paying its mana cost, the alter says that it you would have to pay for it

EDIT: i see that you already caught that. Nice work!

Nice work!

  • TKDbeast

People are making this out to be worse than it actually is. It’s certainly whack, but interesting synergies are at play. I’ll break it up into three parts:

At its core, this is a blue deck that takes advantage of the London Mulligan. It has a relatively large amount of blue mana producers as well as a bunch of card draw. This is supported by the number of 1-cmc blue spells present. They supply much needed card filtration, allowing the player to find whatever cards they need.

Then, it is a Grixis deck. Black adds much-needed removal to combat aggressive decks. Red adds Merchant and Improbable Alliance, rapidly filtering through the player’s deck. Together, along with some artifacts, these two colors keep the player alive.

Finally, the player has assembled enough mana colors. Removal strikes down threats. Improbable Alliance or Outlaws’ Merriment assembles an army. If nothing else, the opponent is overwhelmed by the sheer card advantage and selection, mulligans withstanding.

In short, this deck uses everything it has in order to improve card selection, including mulligans. Due to the slow nature of Limited, enough time is granted to generate enough card advantage and win.

Despite looking atrocious on the surface, you actually have a lot of scry/draw effects so you can find the colors you need, even if they're not quite on time. Outlaw's Merriment is also pretty nuts so if you can slam that down, you'll win most of the time. I do question the Elder but I also know what happens in truly terrible sealed pools where you just don't have anything playable in just 2 or even 3 colors.

Did you ever cast Outlaw's Merriment?

I started counting green sources because I think my brain couldn't comprehend the scale of the mess and I needed to focus on something granular >.<

How did you run this and win?

    *How?*

During 2HG pre-release for M20 I played B/W aggro/ knights while my teammate played 5C Golos essentially. We opened 2 Golos and a bunch of fixing in our pools and it just felt right haha. We went 4-0 with our decks and it was incredible!

I had a 4-2 WAR draft that was mono green + Bolas and black removal.

I won our local fnm eldraine draft with naya aggro adventures. So it definitely can be done

very similar to my 2hg sealed deck. We opened the RW enchant and 3x of the GW elders haha. made for a weird deck but fun.

And I thought my prerelease pool in Shadows over Innistrad was a bad deck that did stupid well. Mine was a 3 color abomination of GR splashing blue because I pulled 2 fevered visions. Wound up getting to the semis and giving the winning player his only game loss of the entire night meanwhile I was sitting there like "this deck sucks I hate this thing" lol good job

Looks like my typical Arena draft deck. :P I usually go between 1-3 and 5-3, so there's that, but the fun you get just can't compare to one you get from playing a regular deck.

Do you have a screenie of the entire pool? I'm baffled that this seemed like the most reasonable option to you. The pool must've been some special kind of garbage

    Checks out.

I love MTG but I've long since accepted that your skill as a player/deckbuilder is largely irrelevant compared to the luck of your draws (in limited, anyway).

Perhaps I'm in a tiny minority that experience/believe this, but I guess that's how luck works.

I mean when you open Faeburrow Elder and Fabled Passage it's hard not to go 5 colors.

You're always gonna get a ton of negativity on here. I made a post about my oops all removal deck I drafted and they basically said I was screwed. I went 4-3 with it, so just try stuff out and figure out what works for you.

I did an alphabetical order draft and ended up with something similar. Went 6-3. By picking cards based on their alphabetical order in the pack.

My first (and only) sealed pool in arena was 3 colors. I also went 7-1. But I opened Oko+Garruk+Questing Beast.

This deck looks so bad I honestly have to question if it did do that well.

Just started altering cards and I'm really proud of how Brago turned out!

I believe the name has to be visible for it to be a legal card. Something to consider for future alters!

This one looks like a banger, so you are of to a good start!

Nice but it would be better if you can see and read the name. I belive ther is an offical rulling for this.

    Awesome job btw.

Does altering a card make it significantly heavier or easier to identify in any way while single sleeved? I was thinking of doing basic land alters for when I go play limited but don’t want to give myself any sort of advantage by being able to identify my lands (always sleeves) vs my other cards.
