Kick it real hard xx
It’s a good thing they invented “they” like 700 years ago for a gender neutral pronoun.
(Yes I’m a party pooper)
I saw on Facebook a meme about someone replacing “man up!” with the gender neutral “Fortify!”
So now I am going to say “Fortify yourself, comrade!”
if your Canadian you can just call everyone "bud"
I would consider it an honor to be called comrade
Still better than french where all nouns has an assigned gender. Except a few nouns that people kept getting the gender wrong so we decided to make them officially gender-fluid

This is what the Church should be doing. Instead of demonizing people and making enemies, they should be welcoming and then they'll have more followers.
That is Christ-like love right there! One of the reasons I’m not of the faith is because of the hypocrisy of churches and congregations, acting holier than thou when all of us are God’s children. You go to an amazing church!
see, if more religious people reacted like this, then we wouldn’t be misconstrued as trying to demonise those of opposing views
What would Jesus do? He'd do this......
As an excatholic... sorry, this doesn't do it for me. Theres far too much "love the sinner hate the sin". I have no doubts that my local church would be fine with having a gay member, but they'll still consider my lifestyle a sin thats sending me to hell.
No. I've spent my entire life staring back at fake smiles hiding judgement and disgust. I knoe you mean well OP but I'm not going back to that place.
I love this!!!! My church is the same way. I love places like this.
My new church is like this and, since I grew up Catholic, it’s suuuch a different experience and I love it.
I’ve become SUPER suspect of churches who advertise themselves as “welcoming” or use phrases like “all or welcome.” A local megachurch near me does this shit, but they’re super now down with the gays. They’re fine with you going to their church, they’re fine with you giving them your money, but they don’t perform same-sex marriages, and they don’t allow LGBTQ people to serve as leaders in their church.
I appreciate the efforts of OP’s church, but stay vigilant! Churches understand the negative optics of being openly anti-LGBTQ now, and will mimic this behavior if they want your money or time bad enough.
This is amazing!! I live in Alabama as well. I wish I could find a church like that
The essential message of the teaching of Jesus Christ would be that it takes Love to triumph over Hate. How utterly ironic that in our day and age so many so-called Christians require a front page newspaper ad to remind them of what their professed faith is all about.
I don’t get how god loves gays but sentences people to hell if they are gay?
HRC on The United Methodist - https://www.hrc.org/resources/stances-of-faiths-on-lgbt-issues-united-methodist-church - They don't really welcome you. They just voted to keep their anti-LGBT stance. If this church really loved you they would drop "United Methodist" part.
Fuck them and their hate.
i wish more churches would do this i am not a christian but still it would be nice
You know that when someone who is homophobic due to religion and they start judging you then they start sinning too
I am not christian but honestly if I saw something like this in my local newspaper for a church I might actually go to learn. I feel like a huge portion of not wanting to attend is the people.
And here I thought I would be free of religious nutcases on this sub. Disgusting.
You religious gays are something else. The United Methodist does not respect you and still views you as sinners because of your sexual orientation and/or gender identity. By clothing themselves in the pride flag they put on a friendly face to indoctrinate lgbt people
out of curiosity what makes lgbt people religious when religions speak so terribly about gay people.
Cock and ball torture
Now as soon as they start practicing what they preach...
I couldn't give less fucks about what someone's imaginary friend thinks of me or my friends and family.
I love the message!
What I find hilarious about all of this, though, if you don't mind a quick rant... is that they're reaching out to us at all.
Like, for thousands of years they've demonized, persecuted, and tortured our community. Now that they're numbers are dwindeling, their donations falling short, and the amount of agnostic/atheists growing larger everyday, NOW they decide to reach out to us.
like "Hey guys, we don't hate you anymore! come donate to our new, awesome, mega-gay church!"
but again, I like the message, it's just a bit of a 'too-little too-late' sort of thing for me. Growing up in a religious family and attending religious schools my entire child-hood, I've sat in many a pew, for many a hour, and I'll never submit to doing so again.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me for 2,000 years up to and including now... I think I’ll pass. Churches can just save their breath. My expectations are so low I’ll take just don’t try to kill me or take my rights away, but I don’t want anything to do with them. And besides, ‘everyone is welcome’, are you actually welcome? Or is it just: we won’t kick you out if you’re gay, but please don’t talk about it or make us think about it? Not all welcomes are created equal.
Love the religious hate the religion right?
I'm a lesbian from Birmingham and this just made my heart so full!
That is impressive. You have a cool church there.
I used to work in the advertising department of a newspaper and thought it was important to point out that those types of wrap ads are REALLY expensive. My sales territory had a lot of churches, and churches don’t have big budgets for advertising, and anything over $200 was usually too expensive.
Depending on the day of the week, that wrap ad was at least $2000. If it was a Sunday paper, easily double. They could have taken a out a small ad, but they went big, and I hella respect that.
Man I loved fruit stripe gum as a kid.
I whole heartedly wish I could personally apologize to every person in the LGBT community who has been discriminated by a “Christian”. My hope is that one day the new generation of Christians can out weigh the hate the old white men and women of the church have created. I have been a strong Christian my whole life but I’ve also been a strong bisexual my whole life. It’s not an oxymoron like most of them would make me feel. I’m sorry for the constant hatred and belittlement that the church throws at you.
Open and affirming UMC! I go to one and they're not afraid to stand for what's right. 👊
Fuck yeah. These guys get it. Good on you!
This is Christianity done right. Beautiful
Since they can’t kill us, now they want our money. 🙄
The churches death throw's. When they begin to cater to the same group of people they hated and despised for millenia, that's when you know the public opinion is shifting out of their favor.
This is beautiful.
The sentiment is wonderful.
The Christian god does not accept everybody, and his "salvation from eternal damnation" is conditional.
I really want everyone to get along, but this ad is just an attempt to garner more tithings/donations.
There’s a bunch of stuff in their holy book that says otherwise
This is great.
When I first sought out a gender therapist, the location was in a Protestant church and I legit had a tiny fear they were gonna "convert" me as soon as I stepped inside, but that church partnered with the LGBT+ non profit up state. The pastor would come in for second Friday get-togethers and I learnt that he had made sermons before about accepting us - none of that "hate the sin" stuff either.
I've been an atheist since childhood but knowing that there are churches out there that accept us unconditionally is a rare and inspiring thing.
They will try to un gay you at the first service.
To bad the bible is homophobic, sexist and slavery supporting. Whoops
That right there is how I'm starting to actually find my faith. It's really nice to see these types of things!
Finally a church that accepts the fact that being lgbt isn’t a choice and that god must have made it that way (I’m not religious but I still will get involved if it means their making a more accepting change)
Hell. Fucking. Yes. Im not even religious and i friggin love your church! Where in Alabama is your church? I may be close by.
Ok but what if I worship at the Church of Night. What then?
Read this in the voice of Michael Scott
I would still go to church if this was the case
god is slowly catching up to the rest of society.
That is so fucking beautiful 😢😭
Which part of Alabama is this??
I thought this was a quote from The Office where Michael Scott has to answer David Wallace when he asked him about sales numbers and he didn’t know what to say so he has an improv conversation. “An improvisation”
I'm seeing a bunch of churches in my area put rainbow decorations and "all are welcome" on their signs and it warms my gay heart
I’m a Canadian Baptist which is very different than America’s southern Baptists. When I told my (24f) American boyfriend (27m) that I was baptist he near broke up with me claiming I was too unaccepting, and that Jesus loves all people. When he finally agreed to come to my church he quickly found out that Baptist’s in Canada are usually the more accepting denomination.
I’m so happy to see a church FINALLY say publicly what the bible has been saying this whole time!
One of the seldom moments that makes me happy to be an Alabamian.
As an Alabamian, I gotta say it still blows my mind sometimes how much more open minded and accepting people here have become over the past 10 years or so. keep fighting the good fight
Absolutely love it!!! As a straight male that recently moved from CA to FL, it’s been eye opening. Gay/lesbian bashing, transphobic people, all of it.
Whoever YOU are and whatever YOU know that you are. No matter the city, the country or even the restaurant or bar. Know that YOU are loved!!! You love just like every other person on this planet. Love YOU and me and other straight people absolutely have your back, always!!! Much love to YOU!!!☮️&❤️
Gtfo out of here with this shit
That's fair. A lot of horrible shit has been done in the name of Christianity, and it's perfectly reasonable to be extremely wary. It's certainly possible this ad was posted in bad faith. It's also possible that it was genuine. Just please don't immediately shoot down all attempts at reconciliation like many people in this comment section are doing. Christians are not a monolith. We're never going to get all of them to be friends of the LGBT community, but that doesn't mean there aren't some who are.
I'm bi and Christian and lots of people question how I can be both when my beliefs 'clash'. I'm so glad to know that there are churches out there that are this openly welcoming and loving. I can only hope that this message will increasingly be the one that is spread, rather than the church preaching exclusivity and intolerance to difference as it often does.
This is Christianity and the majority of religions. Peace over war, love over hate, acceptance over judgement.
Dude this made me so happy to see. Wow. Thanks for sharing :)
Maybe it’s a trap? 🤔
Atheist here. Churches like yours are why im not an antitheist any more and are the only hope of Christianity to survive this century. Good luck!
What if I don’t believe in god and don’t need a religious faith to help me build community and all the common sense stuff that the Bible tries to teach lol?
I go to a United Methodist church as well. We are in theNorth in a reconciling congregation which pretty much means we know what the governing body of the UMC says regarding LGBTQ but we are ignoring them because that’s what Jesus would do. Our pastor is very pro lgbtq and our family along with several other lgbtq families attend and are welcomed with open arms. Most didn’t grow up Methodist and came to our church because of how open and welcoming we are.
We have a rainbow flag flying on a flagpole out front on a very busy road to let others know our stance and let people know they are welcome. It gets stolen so frequently that there is a stockpile of them in the basement. It gets replaced right away every single time but last month someone in the middle of the night took out the entire flagpole that was cemented in the ground and managed to bend the metal and take it out. It was very very upsetting and felt like an attack. Luckily a local business paid to replace the flagpole and reinforce it in the ground and our pastor said that she supports us, and if it’s taken down again somehow, we will just keep putting them back up.
My philosophy is basically this, and this is something that I live by, and I always have, and I always will: Don't ever, for any reason, do anything, to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been, ever, for any reason whatsoever.
Can we get a town/address? I'd like to send them pizza.
It makes me feel warm that even us Queer people are receiving this message from a church well.
Don't trust white christain people. They will betray you any time.
almost makes me want to go to church lol
it's almost like they want people to give them money...
Is this today's Birmingham News? Because I will definitely run get a copy...
Sorry, satanists have been much nicer to me than you, there’s no turning back after all those years of abuse you caused me
...AND, if you're a fourteen year old girl, we'll fucking show you how much!!!
It's heartbreaking to see the cynicism in these comments. Some churches are genuinely trying to right the wrongs of their ancestors. Not in a "love the sinner, hate the sin" way, either. Some churches truly wish to be allies of the LGBT community. Christians and the LGBT community do not have to be enemies. If you can't accept that, then you are no less prejudiced and no less hateful than the Christians you so despise.
Did anyone else end up thinking of the song "Cotton Eyed Joe" when they read this?
I don't know why but I did.
I’m surprised it was printed.
that newspaper ad probably more than paid for itself
Stop trying to redeem the irredeemable, Christianity hates the LGBT and if "my church is different" then that church isn't Christian
God loves everyone. He holiness cannot abide sin.
Is this one of those "love the sinner, hate the sin" situations though? Being welcome to worship is one thing, but can they also live their lives fully, expressing their love for whomever they choose without judgement?
I read that in his voice. Brilliant.
I wasn't aware of Tom Allen before this post, but now I love him. Thank you for sharing this, it made my day
who is tom allen and why should i care? honest question
I participated in this in high school. I lived in Denver, Colorado at the time and went to a private high school. First rule was one of the 3 openly gay students had to participate (I was the only one of the 3 that did). Onve they had me participating I was repeatedly harassed by staff to stop participating so they could shut the entire thing down. Teachers were fine with it, other students were fine with it, just school administrators weren't fine with it. It was really sad. Not sure how common this was in the early 2000s but still sad.
I wish I lived in America so I could take part in the National Day of Silence
I wanted to participate, but I was too scared...
Turn on the news. It isn't just the Middle East and Alabama that has a problem with gays.
Sadly, my middle-school child had no idea about this.
I can't imagine this being a thing when I was in school (peak HIV/AIDS Crisis), but sure wish it was.
Ah, would have been cool if I remembered this was today but unfortunately I didn't
Thanks, sincerely ❤❤❤
Saw your shirt and thought it said Panic! At The Whisko
I’m gay, and I don’t see this as an issue other then like the Middle East, or extremely south.
This comment sounded wrong, I do realise the issue of homophobia in plenty of places, my point was that the world is getting better at it, and slightly less so in those places. I communicated my point poorly so I apologise.
I very much appreciate the intent of this day, but boy did I loathe it in high school. I was deep in the closet and attending the GSA as “questioning/ally.” Most of the GSA attendees were fairly cisheteronormative, if out/LGBTQ at all, who felt much safer and could proudly participate in the Day of Silence. As a life-long gender nonconforming kid who’d been called gay as early as six, I didn’t feel safe enough do that, so seeing them do it just reinforced that silence way more than for any of the other GSA/queer related events/days/etc. Even now almost 10 years out I can still physically feel it as I’m thinking about it.
Good on you for doing it. It’s not that I don’t think others should or that the day shouldn’t exist - it’s important! Just painful in how real it was for me.
