  • blu333

I don't see how people are that surprised by any of this. No one bawked balked at Mark Stone getting $9.5M but now it's crazy for Duchene, who scored at similar rates and is a center, to get the same or more?

  • sabresguy
    136 points Jun 19,2019, 8:59am

To anyone who thinks that these contracts are ‘getting ridiculous’ you fail to realize that it’s 2019 and players don’t want 2013 money they want 2019 money. With the quality of players increasing those who set themselves apart are going to want competitive compensation. And if you use contracts signed in 2013 as your model then your out of touch with how business is being done today. Especially with top tier players

  • Sportfreunde
    44 points Jun 19,2019, 8:30am

$9-10M is fair value for a UFA 1C these days. And Matt Duchene is a 1C. He's not the best 1C in the league but how few of them hit the open market to begin with?

Dunno why people are saying it's overpayment as if this is 2016. John Tavares literally just got paid $11.5 M last summer and he's a better player but if he got that amount then Duchene is getting at least $9.5 M the next summer.

So what happens when we draft Kakko and in 3 years he scores 50 and has 50 helpers? Do you pay him 20mil if a clown like Hayes gets 7???

  • Beauville
    15 points Jun 19,2019, 8:37am

This is getting out of control pretty quickly...the disparity between entry level contracts and 2nd/3rd contracts are going to be significant. To a GM, there's really no incentive to draft well.

If you draft 3 great players in one year, let's say, but they all go from a few million towards combined your cap to 20 million after their entry levels combined, how can a team sustain a roster this way?

  • LowcalRider

  • Brandon_rubeo
    2 points Jun 19,2019, 11:05am

Little high if you ask me but I understand that’s where the market is going. Wondering if the nhl will have any future issues considering contracts are guaranteed. Yes, the salary cap is continuing to climb but long term big money deals are no longer reserved for a handful of guys across the league. Now every team has a handful that could handcuff them for years to come if the league doesn’t continue to grow at a considerable pace. With that said, I believe the league has never been better positioned to thrive given the on ice product and accessibility to fans. Get your paper Matt Duchene lol

  • llamapen_reddit
    2 points Jun 19,2019, 11:56am

I don’t get the logic of pointing to these bad outlier contracts as a case for why a guy should get paid. “Hey Kevin Hayes is making 7 over 7. I’m better than Hayes, I want 11 over 8 now.” Like yea we aren’t going to use a trash contract as a baseline. Teams could just as easily say Scheifele makes 6, Barkov makes 6, Mackinnon makes 6, and you aren’t better than any of those guys. You can’t point to overpaid on obviously bad contracts any more than you can point to underpaid guys on obviously team friendly contracts. Hayes is about a $5M player, Scheifele, Barkov, Mackinnon are probably worth $9-11M and I’d say Dutchy deserves $8-9M.

  • SupremeNachos
    2 points Jun 19,2019, 12:58pm

How soon before we see teams copying MLB and not signing guys who are 30+yrs old unless they take half of what they're worth? Once again this is a problem created by the owners by not learning from last mistakes. I doubt there were more than 2 other teams even willing to think about giving Skinner 9m but Buffalo panicked and gave in.

    1 points Jun 19,2019, 11:31am

I don't think that's too unreasonable if he hits free agency. Yeah, free agency is going to cost more. That's normal. But with Duchene you're getting one of the best faceoff guys in the league who only puts up 50 points on a really off season. At worst, you're getting a 2C if you've already got a solid 1C, who can move up if your 1C is injured. Duchene isn't a guy you build a team around, but you're going to get your money's worth out of him. I'd pay him 10 before paying Hayes 7.

Teams keep signing these deals and theres going to be a horrific adjustment period where everyone realizes they can't pay 3rd line forwards and 2nd pair dmen 4+ mil anymore. Gonna be a lot of guys in their late 20s out of jobs soon unless they take huge pay cuts.

  • layout420
    1 points Jun 19,2019, 12:35pm

Barkov's contract is a steal for what these guys are after. Barkov easily produces twice the rate as some of these guys who are seeking 9+ mil.

I think we're going to look back at this couple year period specifically and these deals are going to be so polarizing. Categorized as GREAT in hindsight and TERRIBLE in hindsight, no middle ground. Drai, Eichel, Nylander are going to look fantastic. Some of these other ones (Hayes at 7+ for 7 years LOL) are just going to be appalling for various reasons.

Well, #DucheneWatch2019 doesn't quite have the same meme potential as #KarlssonWatch2019 or #TavaresWatch2018 did but it'll still provide us with some good memes. Let's start this shitshow.

Sorry, no context on the colours. Here you go...

    COLOUR LEGEND LINK

    • RED = FAIL
    • ORANGE = DUMP
    • BLUE = CARRY
    • NAVY = PASS

The names that surprised me on this list were Schmaltz and Burakovsky.

The remainder were pretty much what I expected to see. Still, interesting to see it in the data.

McDavid stands out as having a VERY small percentage of failed entries, even compared to other top skaters. He almost never fails to enter, even though he tries it a tiny bit less often that the top few guys.

  • slabby
    6 points Jun 14,2019, 7:11pm

Doesn't pass much, mostly carries the puck himself. Yep, I can confirm that's Athanasiou.

  • Funkativity
    5 points Jun 14,2019, 6:14pm

any chance of a legend to give the actual values and to explain what those coloured sections mean?

this chart is fairly meaningless without it

  • ovondansuchi
    4 points Jun 14,2019, 6:13pm

I got downvoted to hell last time I said this, so let me double-down: Johnny Gaudreau is the second best player on a Canadian team. He's amazing at zone entries. He setups shot attempts better than almost anyone in the league. He made Elias Lindholm into a first liner. He jumps off the page in every way, and is criminally underrated.

Also, Barzal is the truth. What a stud.

  • Lp165
    1 points Jun 14,2019, 6:26pm

This why I’m still not sold on the Dylan Strome trade for the Hawks. Schmaltz is elite at entering the zone while Strome is pretty mediocre in that regard

  • emblah

If you’ve ever seen a Golden Knights powerplay than you’ll know what the exact art form of a failed zone entry looks like

  • myevilfriend
    1 points Jun 14,2019, 7:38pm

I looked up and down the list feeling sad Barzal wasn't on there, didn't expect him to be first. If he learns to shoot more and not pass as much it'll be hard to contain him

Doesn't pass much, mostly carries the puck himself. Yep, I can confirm that's Athanasiou.

any chance of a legend to give the actual values and to explain what those coloured sections mean?

Updated list ranking Stanley Cup winners by how many teams were in the league when they won the cup

  • cankoda
    66 points Jun 14,2019, 6:33am

Did this last year so I though I’d update it with the recent cup win and some more teams and details.

So I basically I took the a cup win and multiplied it by the number of teams in the league at the time or the number of teams you needed to get though

For example Montreal won 10 cups between 1942 and 1967 with 6 teams in the league so they got 60 points, or Chicago’s 3 cups between 2000-2017 with 30 teams gives them 90 points.

Here's how you can rank if a team outperforms cup wise.

Every year each team would theoretically have an equal chance of winning the cup. So

    A = 1/number of teams that year

original 6, every team would have 1/6 of a cup at that time, now it's 1/31

sum all those fractions to get the total expected cups if a team is average, then do a Ratio:

Cups won / Sum (A). the higher the ratio, the higher the outperformance

I can see how one might thinking giving more weight to a winner when more teams are in the league. However, not sure how much weight you can give. With less teams, that would mean the best talent available is less spread out, making the teams stronger. Bear in mind NHL was like 95% Canadian players. In summary, so difficult to compare different eras.
