Sophia Narwitz and Responsible Journalism: A short Q&A with Michael Koretzky

Just a quick chiming in from the mod team - I've looked over the headers, and the email appears to be legit from Koretzky.

It's not that I get mad when they say I'm pro-gamergate. I've been open and honest that I am. It's that they use it as a loaded term to tell people I support the harassment of journalists, which I don't. Because within my paradigm, and I would hope most of you here, Gamergate is not a harassment campaign. Did some fall under our banner who wreaked chaos, no fucking doubt. But when Schreier says I'm pro-gg and that I've harassed journalists before, he's trying to tell his base that I purposefully doxxed 2000 people. And that is false, and that's why I get mad.

Michael Koretzky is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, and has helped to create and run the Kunkel Awards. He organized the SPJ Airplay meant to discuss Gamergate (which was interrupted by bomb threats).

    4 points Aug 07,2019, 10:16am

I don't know who Koretzky is outside of what others in the thread have mentioned, but I like the guy. I appreciate when others put their principles above personal like or dislike.

That said, I disagree on one point. It's not understandable that they won't link her video. Journalism acts as signal boosting by its very nature. It's impossible to separate the two. "We should piggyback off this story for our benefit but should intentionally try to deny the person who did the work because we don't like her," is not something a respectable person does. Either report on the story and accept the downside or don't. I hate people who try to have it both ways.

I have a counter-question for Koretzky (if he happens to be reading this)

Knowing what you know of GamerGate, and it's origins, do you still feel comfortable with the lock-step demonization of the movement, and the individuals involved in it?

Summary of the AMA by Mechwarrior 5 devs on Epic Exclusivity. Lies, distortions and bad explanations

If a game is exclusive to epic game store, I treat it as if it's not available on PC.

    47 points Jul 26,2019, 2:31am

    EGS offers more visibility

Where the fuck are all the other mech based combat shooters competing with you? I'm still waiting for From Software to get off their Dark Souls bender. Seriously, how many goddam times can they make the same fucking game? Demon Souls, Demons Souls B, Demons Souls B II, Demons Souls B III, European Demons Souls, Japanese Demons Souls, and now LOTR Demons Souls. I got Daemon Machina coming out on the Switch but Mechwarrior is iconic. Even if you don't want to pay for ads a good game will have the players spreading the word for you.

    Bitch about Steam's 30% cut

    Fuck you PGI.

I get that the primary focus of a business is to make money. But if you're going to toss morals, ethics, or even consideration for your own customers under the bus chasing the unobtainable goal of "more money" then fuck you.

Because that's what you're saying to me.

Wants to sell a million copies of MW5

    lol

We'll see. Maybe you will. After the EGS exclusivity ends. Or maybe Pirate Bay will hit a million downloads first. Either way, I hope Epic fronted you enough money to keep your studio open for a while. I can't imagine that people are going to be all that happy with you even after the exclusivity deal ends.

LOL, 20K Pre-Orders? 700 already cancelled, lets say double that by now, so 7% cancelled already. While maybe better than MWO that is really nothing. Without the visibility Steam the fan base is never going to expand. As a life long fan of the franchise, picking up my first CBT mini when I was maybe 5 or 6; I gotta say that I hope Microsoft takes the license back and either sells it to a studio with a history of fan service or they run it in house.

Also no way to co-op without using the Epic Game Store. Yeah fuck these guys.

  • NickTheHalfling
    3 points Jul 26,2019, 10:16am

I'm wholly unsurprised that the company that sells $500 golden mechs and stays afloat by relying on selling absurdly expensive early-access mech packs. PGI has shown again and again that they will happily screw the consumer in order to make their own ends meet. Way to shit the bed, Russ, I'll be raising the black flag to the end of the mast as soon as MW5 drops.

Just to play devils advocate, but as a Mwo player, yes PGI messed up with its first efforts at the game, and yes, it was garbo at the start, but if you play it currently, youd know its a solid fun game with a strong and welcoming community. Is it a bit of a disapointment that MW5 is going EGS,yes, but im willing to give PGI a chance and see if they walk the walk on this. If the game turns out better then expected, then ill be willing to accept that it was needed, if not, then its just more EGS bullshite.

Why is everyone such whiny bitches about Epic Game Store? This is such a manufactured outrage thing. The only part of this outrage that makes any sense is when a game with a patreon or Kickstarter or similar which made being on steam a feature changes it. Otherwise, get fucking real. The way a game is delivered to you is not worth all this crying.

It seems like when the "psych we aren't on steam we are on epic" happened and people got legitimately pissed people just moved that outrage to Epic Store in general, which is pretty stupid.

Edit: yeah downvote me, how about you explain why I'm wrong, whiner

Information security is an adversarial field. Your job isn't to create a system that works, it's to create one that works even when other people try to make it not work. Knowing how people make the naive solution not work is part of how you implement a better system that lacks these vulnerabilities.

What YouTube is trying to do is called "security through obscurity." It's generally regarded as a bad thing, because you can't rely on all your attackers being ignorant.

Edit: That's not just true for information security. Watching the LockPickingLawyer's videos - a series encompassing threat models both reasonable and unreasonable - is how I came up with a type of pick-resistant lock (one that I was unfortunately not the first to invent).

Really? The hubbub about the botnets was from a few months ago citing that most of the operators were basically incompetent and followed tutorials.

But the upshot of it was that they were extremely easy to detect, take over and shut down because they used defaults from a tutorial lol.

Maybe if the standard for IoT security wasn't in the absolute gutter for 10 years the bar might be too high for dumbasses who leave default settings and passwords.

The problem is that companies released swarms and swarms of low hanging fruit all over the internet with reckless abandon and for some reason, no legal consequences.

Taken to the extreme (and it will be), this will eventually target anything from phone rooting to CPU overclocking to "hacking" John Deere's DRM-infested farm equipment. Anything corporations want to charge you for instead of letting you do it yourself.

Kiss your right to repair good bye.

[SocJus] Puget Sound Business Journal: "Outstanding Voices: Wizards of the Coast's Jeremy Crawford urges gaming to be more inclusive"

KotakuInAction: The almost-official GamerGate subreddit!

COMMENTS

  • Bellowingwhale
    17 points Jun 14,2019, 2:50pm

Holy fuck, I'm LGBT (Specifically the B), When I was in my early teens, and wanted a "Queer" character... I just said they were. I mean fuck, a Drow day-walker with a (purposely and needlessly high) CHA stat that was able to seduce guards, no matter their gender, was handy. I didn't need the book to reflect the fact my identity existed.

the girl in our group, literally played a female halfling paladin, who stuffed her pants to make it look like she had a massive cock, and said she was a guy, because (in the lore the DM had done up) Paladin was a restricted to male class (Deities didn't care, but the churches did, and it was the churches who trained you as Paladins) That was back in the early 2000's (She actually did come out as Trans a couple years back, but unlike the Trenders, she actually made the commitment, and isn't brow beating people about pronouns and shit).

When you people try to token us as a "see, we're inclusive, gender bending elves, who are more magical than their ability to... fucking do magic!" is infuriating, and honestly... part of why I don't want to play D&D (especially since I live in the Seattle Area....)

  • Limon_Lime
    11 points Jun 14,2019, 2:43pm

I love when I hear that. Gaming was inclusive, we just didn't circlejerk about it because it didn't matter.

  • JustOneAmongMany
    8 points Jun 14,2019, 2:37pm

Jeremy Crawford is a name that's been mentioned here before, largely due to his open admission of agenda-pushing in D&D;, which is why the game's canon now includes sex-changing elves as PC options and has in-game characters talking about how their local gay communities are more magical than spellcasting.

In this article, which I needed to capture with FireShot in order to get around the paywall (losing the pictures and video, but preserving the text), he continues to talk about how he's using D&D; as a tool for social engineering:

In gaming, such inclusion is especially powerful because it’s not just representation, it’s an invitation to play an LGBTQ character. To an LGBTQ player, playing such a character can be liberating, and for a straight player, that play can be enlightening, as well as a pathway to greater empathy. Working in gaming, especially on D&D;, allows me to offer that representation and that invitation on a large scale, both in the books we publish and in my appearances at game conventions.

Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting to help people, and working with any sort of minority population to help them grow up into healthy, well-adjusted members of society is unequivocally a good thing. But I question his underlying premises about "representation" doing that, especially since he's putting that above making a good product. Indeed, to date he's largely fucked over D&D;'s lore in order to accomplish his goals, which suggest that he should probably be in a different line of work. Reaching out and engaging with a community is fine, but D&D; is not and should not be made into a tool in order to do that.

EDIT: Also, WotC as a company is perfectly fine with this, since they highlighted this publication's interview in their latest podcast.

  • timbowen
    3 points Jun 14,2019, 2:50pm

How the hell does playing a gay elf in D+D help anyone in the real world?

  • themanclaw
    4 points Jun 14,2019, 4:01pm

Even though I disagree with Crawford putting identity politics into TTRPG, having seen him talk a lot leads me to believe he's a genuinely good guy with good intentions. That's a lot more than I can say with many gaming SJWs, but if only the world were so simple that every SJW was an evil authoritarian. With that said, good people can still be wrong.

I really dont wanna to think about stuff like this in my games which I use for escapism it can be done subtle but if I choke on it then the immersion is ruined and so is the game. Its already pretty hard to dodge all this "inclusion" in tv shows and movies nowadays and I am just tired of it. At least anime is still a save heaven.

[Twitter BS] Jason Schreier publishes interview with CDPR boss regarding "crunch, controversies over transgender issues, GOG layoffs" - Tells Twitter user other websites are available for info related to the game itself

KotakuInAction: The almost-official GamerGate subreddit!

You want information on a game on this gaming website? Pfft that's not what this "gaming enthusiasm website" is about

  • _theholyghost
    90 points Jun 14,2019, 12:57pm

    Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier published an article where he discussed various issues within the industry as well as "controversies over transgender issues" with the boss of CD Projekt Red, Marcin Iwiński. A Twitter user said the following;

it would have been nice to get information on relevant things like the scope of the game, size of the world etc. Good to hear you made solid use of your interview time \eye-roll**

    Schreier then went on to respond with;

If you want to read interviews that ask questions about how many polygons will be in an upcoming video game, there are plenty of other websites out there for you.

While I understand the importance of talking openly about issues relating to crunch and unnecessary layoffs, I found this exchange to be a good example of the condescending tone in which many of these 'journalists' interact with those just interested in hearing more about the game, its mechanics and what players can expect to experience when the game finally releases. The idea that this user was asking "how many polygons will be in an upcoming video game" seems rather reductive to what the user was actually asking for. What do you think?

EDIT: Added link to Twitter thread and fixed some grammar.

He's trying to ride on the coattails of his earlier success, with that "Anthem exposed" article he wrote about how terrible Bioware is.

Difference is, of course, that when he wrote that, everybody had already played Anthem and didn't need information about the game play, microtransactions, or whatever.

I love how he mocks people for wanting to know game-related details about a video game. it takes a progressive to shit on the people that fund your existence.

Not really surprised anymore, it's pretty much same same with these websites by now.

Jason is still seen as some kind of golden child by many, granted it's probably only because of his connections within the media, and the fact that he's not screaming about social justice every two seconds like all the others...

I'm going to be the devil's advocate and defend Schreier (God help me): I agree with him. Kotaku and him are into gender politics and worker's rights and everything for what we know them. They have the right to talk about them. It's good because free speech is for everyone and it's a private company. They can do what they want and if there are readers for it, let it be.

Most of the gaming outlets already talk about the pure gameplay so there's no lack of information about Cyberpunk 2077 so having a different focus in an interview is a non issue.

  • Grumpy-Avocado

Jason can do good journalism, but when he focuses on questions like this it's where the stereotype blue checkmark journalist shows up with him. Telling people to look elsewhere is a bad take.

I wanna read an interview to figure out if I wanna buy a game or not, looking over trans issues and stuff related to that has little to do with why someone would buy or look into a game. This disconnect is one of the biggest issues with games journalists these days.

  • HolyThirteen
    4 points Jun 14,2019, 7:43pm

Thank you, Jason Schreier. THIS is why I roll my eyes into my skull whenever people kiss his ass over one of his scandalous little exposes. He's never doing it to inform gamers, it's never about a healthy environment for the creative works themselves, it's about manipulating narratives that give him moral control over all of these companies.

  • PoisonTaco
    6 points Jun 14,2019, 3:33pm

They'll target CDPR for crunch when Bethesda, Epic, EA, Ubisoft and Activision/Blizzard are the biggest users and abusers of crunch? Give me a fucking break.

They're just using any angle of attack to make CDPR look bad to gamers. They're pissed off that they're independent and based in Poland. They're pissed off virtue signalling can't take them down. They're pissed off they aren't bending the knee enough to the woke brigade.

Make no mistake, this is these degenerate fucks trying to take good games away from us. All because CDPR doesn't pander to their bullshit.

On the topic of Cyberpunk 2077 - should we be worried? I've been real excited for this game for a long time, but stay away from gaming news these days for reasons that should be obvious to folks over here... Now I see this talk of some kind of transgender controversy and I just want to be reassured that things still look on track at CDPR and that there's no reason this game won't be at least as enjoyable as Witcher III. I really hope there isn't super on the nose pandering and lack of nuance.

On one hand, I don't mind what he was going for. It's obvious Jason's beat is now more about the industry itself and not about individual games. Kotaku has plenty of dummies to give subpar previews of games.

That said, this tweet does show how much of a condescending prick he is, especially considering the Kotaku staff, like Totilo, who was writing about polygons.

  • Daz318

And if you want to push your snowflake agenda, you should look for other jobs besides gaming journalism. Oh yes, you can't. You failed, that's why you do that kind of crap on Kotaku.

Speaking of which, the sad part is that there aren't that many websites talking strictly about the scope of the game, side quests, size of the world, vehicles, kind of interactions, gameplay time, possible DLCs, weapons, hacking systems, upgrades, main plot, controls, performance, save systems, checkpoints, loading times, soundtrack, sound effects, game size, possible requirements, etc.

If we search for Cyberpunk 2077/CDPR right now, most of the results will talk about "transphobic tweets", "transgender on billboards", "gender fluid customization", and that kind of crap.

  • GN001-Exia

Because what people care about the most is outrage over literally nothing. I'm sick to the back teeth of this. No one I know in real life cares about trannies. No one I know in real life believes that they're more important a subject than making sure your savings are secure, your pets are chipped, or who is leading the football league de jour.

They're a Wizard of Oz tier illusion. Fewer than one in a thousand people have been diagnosed as having gender dysphoria (though apparently using the clinical term is bigoted again). Far more people suffer from mobility issues. Now imagine if every single topic had to be about access ramps? Where are the access ramps in The Witcher? Don't you know that not having access ramps in your historical fiction setting is causing ten billion disabled people unbelievable distress every single day?! Their deaths are on your hands, CDPR!

    Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier published an article where he discussed various issues within the industry as well as "controversies over transgender issues" with the boss of CD Projekt Red, Marcin Iwiński. A Twitter user said the following;

it would have been nice to get information on relevant things like the scope of the game, size of the world etc. Good to hear you made solid use of your interview time \eye-roll**

    Schreier then went on to respond with;

Okay guys, this is pretty fucking dumb. Information about the goings on of the industry as a whole still falls under the umbrella of games journalism. In fact, as much as I dislike Kotaku usually, recently they've been one of the few outlets doing actual journalism.

  • Borisas
    2 points Jun 14,2019, 6:04pm

That's still important and interesting stuff. Maybe not directly about the game but it involves the company that's making the game. What's the issue here? Gaming journalists aren't a thing and they weren't a thing for a very long time so what's the issue with asking questions about company's well being rather than polygons?

  • HomerNarr

  • shinbreaker
    1 points Jun 14,2019, 7:56pm

On one hand, I don't mind what he was going for. It's obvious Jason's beat is now more about the industry itself and not about individual games. Kotaku has plenty of dummies to give subpar previews of games.

That said, this tweet does show how much of a condescending prick he is, especially considering the Kotaku staff, like Totilo, who was writing about polygons.

  • Daz318
    1 points Jun 14,2019, 7:59pm

A little advice for Jason. Jason this didn't work for EA do you honestly think that it is going to work for Kotaku?

  • gabrielonuris
    4 points Jun 14,2019, 3:33pm

    5 points Jun 14,2019, 2:56pm

I think it's an honest answer. Those topics are his thing, and bad practices and misbehaviour in the industry are the one topic that have real journalistic value on kotaku. So i'm not surprised or shocked about that.

Because what people care about the most is outrage over literally nothing. I mean the truth is that journalism doesn't want to write about "boring" stuff like gameplay details but about things which cause emotion. It's not even that it causes emotion among SJWs but also among as gamers, who are tired of shit like that.

  • Intra_ag

Hollywood has always been overwhelmingly liberal, but conservatives still watch movies because they're grown-up enough to not let an actors personal opinions get in the way of their performance. I wish the left would take on that mindset, as you can't blacklist people forever simply because you disagree with them. Granted, some people here get their panties in a bunch over SJW actors and refuse to watch anything with them in it, but I'd like to think those people are in the minority.

I love JonTron's stuff. I disagree with what he said and think we was wrong to say it, but I'll always watch his stuff because he's a funny guy. But I wish he would play some damn games like he used to.

    Hm...

The difference is that this time it's not some minor eceleb they're attacking...

Steven Fry is practically an institution in himself with a vast history of activism for leftist causes.

Attacking him might not have been the best move and might just (hopefully) spectacularly backfire on those attacking him.

All in all, I think this is going to end up being one of those cases where they end up turning more people against them than anything else.

This is a little bit misleading. The first article is 100% clickbait. Literally the first word of the article is "No."

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2019/05/15/is-stephen-fry-a-white-supremacist/

And then it goes on to specifically explain that the OK sign controversy is a trolling attempt and it defends Stephen Fry.

The second article also mocks twitter and takes Stephen Fry's side.

Only the third one tries to remain "neutral" and presents it as if both sides are valid.

The clickbait article titles are spreading misinformation for the sake of clicks but we shouldn't spread misinformation either, because posting these article titles without context does make it look like those articles are trying to slander Stephen Fry when they are actually on his side.

The metro article is mostly lambasting the notion.

But while Stephen was just trying to raise awareness and drum up support by sharing the universally recognisable OK symbol, others piped up to claim it was a sign of the alt-right

As is the bounding into comics article which repeatedly stresses its an okay symbol even citing the ADL to support that it was innocuous.

Whenever articles like this are published, they need to receive the same outrage mob backlash that they are doling out. Like it needs to happen now. Please show me where to go to donate to an organization or group or something that will publicly shame these fuckers for all of these brazen attempts to ruin people's lives.

At first I thought this was a joke from 4chan, because that’s how it started.. Are people actually taking this shit for real?? How have people devolved into taking offense over every goddamn thing now.

For fuck sakes I’m 24 and that’s still goddamn young to be saying that people are just soft these days. I can’t do an OK hand gesture now without being accused of being a white supremacist/ racist??

Title: "Is Stephen Fry a white supremacist?" Tag line: "No. But some people on Twitter want him to clarify."

So, they know he's not a white supremacist but they still imply it in the title anyway. Dirty, dirty smear merchants.

I thought google was fighting suppress conspiracy theory.

    The spiked article subheadline

No. But some people on Twitter want him to clarify.
