An interesting text-box I came across in an old RPG book about adventuring in medieval Greenland

To update this to a gender equal modern society, where men and women are the same, ignore the strength deduction but keep the dex and con gains

The book is Greenland Saga: The Lost Norse Colony by Avalanche Press, from 2000.

(The cover features a buxom, scantily-clad warrior woman with silver hair, btw.)

Also now they are still the same. Women cannot match men in physicality. That's a fact, deal with it.

Probably should raise charisma by 1 too. Life may not be fair, but game balance should be.

  • Unnormally2
    7 points Jan 15,2019, 10:50am

That's the thing, for freeform tabletop RPG's, nothing says that players HAVE to be on equal footing. The most important thing is having fun, not being perfectly balanced. Now, obviously, large disparities between player power levels can be a point of contention, depending on the player's themselves, but something like -3 STR, +1 DEX, +1 CON is a pretty small, yet flavorful way to distinguish between characters.

Boosting Con and Dex is dubious. Definitely not Con, and Dex depends on its definition. Adventuring is the kind of work that would be severely biased towards men both physically and mentally, and that would be represented in the arbitrarily selected attributes that define an adventurer. When writing my home brew RPG, I decided that recognizing sex differences in this context would effectively make Female into a significant disadvantage, so I let the rule of cool trump reality.

  • nanonan
    1 points Jan 15,2019, 7:18pm

Strength is a stupid attribute anyway. It's something you can gain and lose with training or lack thereof. Goes for most stats really. You can train for strength, agility, stamina and more quite straightforwardly. You can sharpen your intellect, wits and charm with practice and philosophise until you are wiser than Socrates. Injury and illness should greatly affect them but rarely does much at all. Not that I can come up with anything better, it's just something that annoys me.

A little vague though isn't it? When is a Vidya game considered fit for purpose or non defective? I wish the text was a little more specific so you wouldn't have to argue this with valve.

Before you all shout the praises of the Australian nanny state, don’t forget the Aussie government routinely bans games it considers offensive.

  • This_is_my_phone_tho

Steam is already really good about refunds. The only thing they pay attention to is playtime, and tbh that's pretty fair.

On my old pc I bought dark souls 3 the second I could, only to realize I was under speced. They took it back.

Bought a pixle art rougue lite dungeon crawler, got bored after about an hour and returned it.

bought some shitty Tower defense and returned it when i realized it was both boring and needy.

Like, I don't know. I'd be surprised if I heard of someone attempting a good faith return and steam didn't refund.

  • Bigcow200
    4 points Dec 30,2018, 5:32am

The 2 hour policy should scale with game pricing

So say if a game costs more then the refund window is bigger cause a lot of triple A games turn to shit at the 5th hour or so

A good example is no man's sky where you expected stuff but then lots of people exceeded the 2 hours despite not liking the game

  • warcroft
    3 points Dec 30,2018, 8:42am

I'm in Australia and I've twice to get a refund for Artifact.

Yes, yes, I know about "You cant get a refund because you opened the starter packs."

I don't give a shit. There was no notice or warning. How the fuck was I suppose to know?

And there in lies the problem. I wasn't made aware. Australian law I'm entitled to a refund. But they wont give it.

What am I going to do? Cant do shit.

This is essentially the equivalent of judges ruling on cases where they are also writing the law.

Jill Thomas of Stanford is a literal communist. can't have any doctors who don't believe in murdering babies!

seriously though, first step is forcing doctors to do abortions. the next step is forcing doctors to perform trans procedures. most people don't get trans treatment in the US not because it's unaffordable. they don't get it because doctors won't do it. the surgeries and drugs have not even passed basic FDA pre-clinicals. these are drugs and surgeries intended to treat a condition and they haven't even done single blinds to prove such treatments are effective. most doctors won't touch that shit with a 50 foot pole. it's all snake oil that doesn't even meet the most basic of medical standards.

I'm gonna be the voice of reason here and point out that doctors, like other professional classes, are held to very different ethical standards than most of us, especially when it comes to stuff involving medical decision making, like, say, abortions.

There are many, many doctors and even entire hospital systems that are anti-abortion, believe me, its a well worn subject in the halls of medicine.

But, precisely because it is also a massive political issue, it is perfectly OK for the school to want to ensure that this kid is not a kook or a rabid ideologue that is unable to divorce his politics from his medical practice.

If you're turning out Ivy MDs, you want to make absolutely sure what's on their mind in how they want to practice medicine and you also, especially when it comes to reproductive rights, want to make sure they're not going to spend the next 7 years picking fights with your other students, and you might as well start with the Title IX person, since, y'know, the majority of medical students are females...

  • DonQuixoteLaMancha

Like I've said before, since the internet is still a (relatively) free market so any attempt to censor will be routed around. Without draconian laws, they cannot stop the alt-media at most all they can do is slow it down.

This is capitalism in action, it's not fast or glamorous but it does tend to solve problems like this rather well.

Here is the issue, you need crypto based patreon. Coz the banks and credit cards will 100% blacklist people. Its not patreon who usually declines X payment method, its the paypal, credit card companies who directly get involved. Right wing people seem have very autistic take on fiat money tbh.

Gab is definitely a huge part of a the libertarian revolution I've been hoping to see where it becomes impossible to take away rights without putting everyone in prison. Defense Distributed has been working on the self defense side of making gun control literally impossible, Bitcoin is working on that for monetary transactions, and Gab is going after censorship of ideas.

The fact that they have held on this long while their real names are public information is beyond astounding to me.

Everyone that isn't a corporatism shill should be happy about this. Having so much consolidated power to a select few tech firms is terrible for the internet.

  • DonQuixoteLaMancha
    105 points Dec 11,2018, 8:39am

It wasn't good so much as it was... Not completely awful. It felt like a really generic '90s/2000s attempt at adapting a franchise to film. If I had to compare it to something, the fantastic four movie with Jessica Alba comes to mind.

I'd put it in the 60-65 range personally

Honestley I think they gave it a low score because it kind of subtly called out tech companies. I think the main Villian was a mix of Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs perhaps a little less of him than the other two. and perhaps the dude from Google. He wanted to "save" man kind by doing some real awfull shit that would probably get most of the people killed.

They could also have given it a low score because it didnt further their agenda.

  • M37h3w3
    33 points Dec 04,2018, 10:44pm

Not always necessarily true but in this case I think it kinda is.

Bad movies don't get fan art.

  • facemeltingsolo
    6 points Dec 05,2018, 2:18am

Basically I have learned not to trust critic scores on anything that isn't or is marketed as woke that competes with something that is (example Orville vs Star Trek Discovery). Also audience scores after a few weeks are a much better metric than critics these days. Why wait a few weeks? Because while Russian bots don't ruin TLJ's audience rating, third party reputation management/astroturfing ruins initial audience scores with new accounts and phony 10/10 reviews. That's why when Rotten Tomatoes actually investigated claims that TLJ was manipulated at 55 percent, scores then dropped by a huge amount. SJW's always accuse you of what they do.

For multiplats Steam reviews aren't that bad and I would encourage console gamers to check them out if looking for a metric. While they can be manipulated the shills are usually caught fast and are just way too obvious due to history and the real reviews that are there are actual owners who spent their money on something. Not fanboys or astroturfing.

I would also say don't automatically avoid something due to how game journalism or movie critics tries to market something. Example of this would be Far Cry 5. It was marketed as an ANTIFA/Bolshevik Communist Christian killing simulator by games journalism. When it didn't turn out to be that, games journalism then attacked it. So they hurt sales initially, then tried to purposely harm sales when it didn't fit it's narrative. Game devs need to learn that gaming journalism is NOT their friends.

On the other side you have games like Doom and Wolfenstein II that are from the same publisher. Doom was lowballed by sites like IGN with scores in the 7's. Wolfenstein II was hailed a 9.x triumph when it was simply a worse game than Wolf II if you look at audience reviews. These journalists can't even be trusted to review games accurately from the same publisher. If Disney really attempted to fix something like Star Wars a lot of journalism would bash it.

Journalism is dead now that almost all media has been consolidated. You have very few media companies that control all of it (5-6 of them at this point in time) and it's either biased due to ownership being tied to the product, being partnered to the company that makes a product, advertising or agenda.

    3 points Dec 05,2018, 4:26am

Not necessarily. The discrepancy between Critics score and Audience score determines the quality. The lower the Critics score and the higher the Audience score, the better the movie. Inversely, the higher the Critics score and the lower the Audience score, the worse the movie is.

  • The_Directors_Cut
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 10:39am

The story was medicore, you could tell it was missing a big plot device. Plus, making Eddy and Venom "losers" was dumb.

However, the fight scenes, specifically Venom vs. the police was fantastic.

Reminded me a lot of the Batman saving Martha scene in BvS for it's quality in an otherwise bleh movie.

Overall, it wasn't horrible, but it doesn't work as an outside the Marvel universe stand-alone film.

  • ChinoGambino
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 10:53am

I dunno, its just dumb fun. The plot is incredibly thin, the characters act in nonsensical ways, Max Max sounds drunk the entire movie and the antagonist isn't that bad, I wasn't against him for most of the film. That said it was fun enough while watching and to pick apart afterwards with friends.

  • Boppa237
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 12:10pm

Never use any critic score to decide if you like something or not, try it yourself. This is especially true for movies when even a bad movie can be entertaining. For games it is a bit more relevant as a badly designed/buggy game will affect your enjoyment to an extent regardless of personal taste. All my friends who saw Venom said it was damn entertaining but not a good movie. A funny statement if you look at it as isn't a movie's purpose to entertain in the first place?

  • Frostfright

Only real problem with the movie was it felt like there was a solid 20 minutes including an important plot beat missing out of the middle of the film. Venom's Character motivation did a complete 180 without anything triggering it, "I'm going to kill everyone", to "It was just a prank bro, we should save everyone."

  • MrMiracle77
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 3:04pm

It's decently watchable. Neither Dave Michelinie nor Todd McFarlane considered Venom a deep character, mostly one or two dimensional. A lot of writers have tried to give him more character and flesh out the symbiotes. But as I look back on my 90s collecting days, I've started to realize that a big component of Venom's popularity was due to the stagnation of Spider-Man's rogues during the 80s. You had Hobgoblin in 1983, but he was a Green Goblin knock-off at the time. At the time, Venom represented a new and unique threat to Spidey, being able to get around his Spider-sense and duplicating many of his other powers. Beyond that, though, it took a very long time and a lot of editorial effort to find more to do with him.

  • RedditAreStupidAF
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 3:14pm

It was fine. I'd give it a 6 to 7/10. When I saw those cunts gave it a bad score I knew it'd be more good than bad. Also the audience score at the time was like 78% or something.

  • Tehtwo
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 4:34pm

I just can't get behind what they did with it, especially as it relates to Eddie Brock personality. Not because of some loyalty to the canon, I just feel like the specific changes made Venom way more generic as a character without Peter Parker's effect on both of them.

  • KrivenRaven
    1 points Dec 05,2018, 5:14pm

You know, it's a movie with its issues. It feels like an early 2000s superhero movie, and it ends up falling into a lot of the same issues which plagued those. But it really isn't any worse than X-Men or Fantastic Four, and it's leagues better than Blade. I had fun, and I'm actually looking forward to watching it again on blu.

is teh movie GOOD or is it FUN is teh question and answer we see here. Most reviewers mush teh two together. they rate the movie on both its technicalities and how much they enjoyed the film. Some non-media related viewers and reviewers would state how much they enjoy the film instead of analyzing it.

It wasn't good so much as it was... Not completely awful. It felt like a really generic '90s/2000s attempt at adapting a franchise to film. If I had to compare it to something, the fantastic four movie with Jessica Alba comes to mind.

I'd put it in the 60-65 range personally

  • Aesidius
    14 points Dec 05,2018, 4:13am

No. It was entertaining at times, but too much was spent on exposition. Not to mention that actual venom action is very scarce, most of it is Hardy with some venom help, like in the trailer.

Also, the reason venom turns from wanting to destroy humankind to save it is...very stupid. It's like the writers had writers block and said, fuck it.

Big plus for the movie was the villain, he seemed OP and cool. Too bad he is present for only 15 minutes of the movie, he spends most of the time off screen, in a plane.

  • Kazia_Thornhill
    20 points Dec 05,2018, 1:44am

Honestley I think they gave it a low score because it kind of subtly called out tech companies. I think the main Villian was a mix of Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs perhaps a little less of him than the other two. and perhaps the dude from Google. He wanted to "save" man kind by doing some real awfull shit that would probably get most of the people killed.

They could also have given it a low score because it didnt further their agenda.

Not always necessarily true but in this case I think it kinda is.

Bad movies don't get fan art.

Not necessarily. The discrepancy between Critics score and Audience score determines the quality. The lower the Critics score and the higher the Audience score, the better the movie. Inversely, the higher the Critics score and the lower the Audience score, the worse the movie is.

  • NoPantsBaby

Only if it is the exact opposite of the audience score.

Venom didn't have protection from reviewers. It had no social justice message. No melanin shields. So the reviewers had no stake in giving it high scores. But if the audience hates it to it just sucks.

  • Masakari666

Venom wasn't a good movie, but it was fun & entertaining because it was saved by Hardy's performance. In this case the critic / audience disconnect actually makes sense, since many critics were judging it on "movie merits" and not the popcorn factor.

  • Edheldui
    2 points Dec 05,2018, 2:59am

Critics are shills, and users are so accustomed to garbage that they can't recognize it, so none of them is trustworthy.

Like others have said - movie actually sucks. It’s not horrible, but it’s just an average film. Nothing about it stands out. I skipped through the scenes and there’s literally about 10 minutes or so of Venom actually doing anything. The rest is chasing around or talking.

Bane was the only good thing though. That guy is an alright actor.

    1 points Dec 05,2018, 12:41pm

MAJOR ZOMBIELAND SAGA SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!

So... in episode 8, one of the characters, Hoshikawa Lily, was revealed to be a trap. As expected, the SJW parts of the internet have officially made Lily their new trans queen, and they are taking this very, VERY seriously. So seriously in fact that by using the word "trap" or calling Lily "Go Masao" (Lily's original name), you can expect to receive death threats or threats of general acts of violence. Because obviously, threatening to kill people who disagree with you is totally rational.

So seriously in fact that by using the word "trap" or calling Lily "Go Masao" (Lily's original name), you can expect to receive death threats or threats of general acts of violence. Because obviously, threatening to kill people who disagree with you is totally rational.

The whole "trap is a slur" thing is such a load of bullshit. I wish these idiots would fuck off from anime and go infect something else instead.

  • orcwordlaugh
    68 points Nov 24,2018, 12:58am

That brown one, bottom right, is being extremely transphobic.

If you call Lily, a trans undead 12 year old a trap or loli

That only leaves Shota, a boy. Way to misgender her, shitlord!

"Call lily a trap or a loli and I'll do nothing!"

So apparently you can't 'misgender' them by calling them a he.. but also calling them a loli and going along with them being a girl is bad too.

    Kay.

    When did it become transgender?

  • Intra_ag

Your "trans icon" literally exists just to tick off a fetish on the list. He's a much a commentary on transexuals as the big titted blonde half-Japanese/half-white transfer student is on racial demographics.

  • matt200717

4chan and the anime fandom's love of traps has done more for trans acceptance and "normalization" than activism ever has.

  • midnight_riddle
    38 points Nov 24,2018, 1:58am

I don't know, being so mentally unstable that the kid dropped dead of a heart attack at the sight of facial hair seems more in line of a transgender than a trap.

I thought traps are just boys who like to look like girls but don't want to actually be girls.

Yea, sorry to burst your bubble, trannies, but a cross-dressing boy ain't a different gender (no one is but w/e). It's just a trap. There are also some hilarious comments in the ZLS Wikia that because "she" uses "she/her" pronouns that automatically means "she" is trans-"gender", not a trap. To which I can only say... kek. It's just a cute zombie loli trap, ladies and gents, nothing more, nothing less, calm your tumblr tits.

  • kyuzoaoi

The problem is that certain people won't accept the truth that Lily is you know, male. Their harassment methods are the problem, not Masao, ehem, Lily's gender or gender identity or whatever it was.

Ironically, this is from a song over a year old. I don't even know how it suddenly popped up. The whole song is pretty funny, though. It's called No Mercy by The Living Tombstone.

Besides the fact half the people in these videos (guys, too) are using the wrong console controllers (Xbox 360 or PS3, one is even using a PS2 controller, I think), looking at know your meme one of the first shows someone taking an Xbox One disk while the girl on the other side in her D.Va costume used a PS3 or PS4 controller. I mean, I get that it's a stupid meme, and people are probably sick of seeing people do it... but part of the fun is just making fun of the people doing the meme.

[Drama] Yoree Koh / WSJ - "Hate Speech on Live ‘Super Chats’ Tests YouTube"

Kotaku In Action: The almost-official GamerGate subreddit!

COMMENTS

  • Cell-el
    58 points Nov 02,2018, 9:38pm

Gee it's terribly inconvenient that no one who reads this article can now go back and view the stream to see if anyone actually said those things.

    ......Isn't it WSJ?

  • B-VOLLEYBALL-READY
    52 points Nov 02,2018, 9:29pm

This is really blowing up on Twitter. Check out the #WSJKillsKids tag.

One thing I don't understand - were the people on the stream endorsing those comments? Or was it just randos saying a bunch of offensive stuff for the lulz?

  • BarkOverBite
    77 points Nov 02,2018, 9:33pm

I'll repeat what i wrote in the previous thread:

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this week arranged to return donations raised in September during a live stream by Mr. Ralph dubbed a “Super Chat for Good,” even as the comments section became populated by anti-Semitic comments and the hosts talked about a Holocaust meme. The money totaled about $26,000. Many on Twitter complained Friday about having their donations returned to them. They also attacked the Journal and members of its staff, blaming the news organization for the return of the money. When contacted earlier in the week, St. Jude said it was aware of the chats and was making arrangements to reverse any donations. On Friday, a spokesperson said: “We had no intention of receiving or accepting any of the funds associated with the live stream.”

So according to the WSJ, St. Jude cares more about making a political statement than the children under their care.

This is one of the rare situations where i 100% am of the opinion that whoever made this decision should be fired, because they do not have the best interest of those children at heart.

There was always the option of "not thanking" those who gave the money.
And it should have gone no further than that.

  • Jkid
    42 points Nov 02,2018, 9:43pm

What WSJ did for the past 24 hours was nothing short of character assassination. They litterly made a issue out of nothing from a YouTube Channel to further a narrative/agenda of alt-right racism. It's politically motivated because it happened during the 2018 midterms and after the tree of life massacre, and gab being no -playformed. YouTube clearly guanxi'd with WSJ to pull this off.

This is not journalism, this is a media lynching.

Journalism in America is completely dead.

  • mng20
    14 points Nov 02,2018, 11:51pm

There's no way Google and WSJ should be allowed to get away with this. It's one thing to censor people who have views you despise, but it's another to take money away from dying children who have nothing to do with it. That is stooping to an extreme low. We all need to do our part and put the screws on these 2 horrible companies.

If YouTube tried to donate the money anyway, how much we taking bets that WSJ would simply go after the charity that accepted it?

It's really not about where the money came from or what cause it's going to. It's about controlling the platform, and for WSJ in particular, it appears to be about a war of attrition with alternative media and all platforms that play host to it. From old media.

Gee it's terribly inconvenient that no one who reads this article can now go back and view the stream to see if anyone actually said those things.

    ......Isn't it WSJ?

This is really blowing up on Twitter. Check out the #WSJKillsKids tag.

One thing I don't understand - were the people on the stream endorsing those comments? Or was it just randos saying a bunch of offensive stuff for the lulz?

What an absolute nothing of a story.

It's so shallow that it's impossible to see it as anything but an attack.

"Silence this person because of what others do," is the message. How disgusting.

There's no way Google and WSJ should be allowed to get away with this. It's one thing to censor people who have views you despise, but it's another to take money away from dying children who have nothing to do with it. That is stooping to an extreme low. We all need to do our part and put the screws on these 2 horrible companies.
