Alexandre AfonsoVerified (@alexandreafonsoassistant professor of public policy) tweeted this screencap of Social Research Methods by Alan Bryman.

Here, a researcher worries that the interview process necessarily exploits women for the researcher's personal gain, suggesting it may be incompatible with feminist values.

  • RPN68
    8 points Nov 24,2017, 11:59am

    Haha.

Well, the word does come originally from the Latin, contrarotulus, which I believe is masculine. Not that word gender meant then what justards today think it does.

Irrespective, they can go ahead and remove the concept of control variables from statistics and see how that ends up helping with the whole STEM gap thing. I await many lols.

  • amishbreakfast
    7 points Nov 24,2017, 2:52pm

The author has confused two different meanings of the word "control" and then just kept going.

This is like seeing a pencil manufacturer's net earnings in 2014 and then assuming the pencil company fishes for pencils in the ocean with nets.

  • KngpinOfColonProduce
    8 points Nov 24,2017, 3:00pm

According to feminists, what should happen is

Women proceed to shit their pants everywhere because bowel control is masculine.

Women also give up abortion rights because control over one's body is not a feminine value.

Women then give up the right to vote because having control over your government is masculine and therefore patriarchy.

Women fall into a void of chaos with no causal connection to reality, because that is the optimal feminine ideal.

A further dimension that could have been included in the section on "Some contrasts between quantitative and qualitative research" is that, in the view of some writers, qualitative research is associated with a feminist sensitivity, and that, by implication, quantitative research is viewed by many feminists as incompatible with feminism. This issue was briefly signposted in Chapter 2. The link between feminism and qualitative research is by no means a cut-and-dried issue, in that, although it became something of an orthodoxy among some writers, it has been not found favor with all feminists. Indeed, there are signs at the time of writing that views on the issue are changing.

The notion that there is an affinity between feminism and qualitative research has at least two main components to it: a view that qualitative research is inherently incompatible with feminism, and a view that qualitative research provides greater opportunity for a feminist sensitivity to come to the fore. Quantitative research is frequently viewed as incompatible with feminism for the following reasons.

-According to mies (1993), quantitative research suppresses the voices of women either by ignoring them or by submerging them in a torrent of facts and statistics.

-The criteria of valid knowledge associated with quantitative research are ones that turn women, when they are the focus of research into objects. This means women are again subjected to exploitation, in that knowledge and experience are extracted from them with nothing in return, even when the research is conducted by women (Mies 1993).

-The emphasis on controlling variables further exacerbates this last problem, and indeed the vary idea of control is viewed as a masculine approach.

-The use of predetermined categories in quantitative research results in an emphasis on what is already known and consequently in "the silencing of women's own voices" (Maynard 1998: 19).

The criteria of valid knowledge associated with quantitative research also mean that women are to be researched in a value-neutral way, when in fact the goals of feminist research should be to conduct research specifically for women.

-It is something suggested that the quest for universal laws is inconsistent with feminism0s emphasis on the situated nature of social reality, which is seen as embedded in the various social identities (based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, and so on) that are unique to individuals (Miner-Rubino et al.2007)

  • L00minarty
    1 points Nov 24,2017, 7:06pm

It's not like there's a fucking choice what research you use. You use quantitative research for natural sciences, qualitative research for Humanities and both for social sciences.

Well, the word does come originally from the Latin, contrarotulus, which I believe is masculine. Not that word gender meant then what justards today think it does.

For the record: this relates to the release of a software analysis engine aimed at categorizing texts by post modernist centric vernacular.

It's a very limited sort of textual analysis tool, which (depending on how it's been coded) could be run entirely client side.

That doesn't make it entirely innocent, obviously, but it also doesn't make it similar to a black list or anything like this. There's also tools out there which allow you to derive other sorts of information - like, you can do just grab a course description, use a word frequency analysis tool, and type in "critical theory", and if you get more than 3 hits, it's probably a post modernist course. Same thing with "discourse analysis". Same thing with "Judith Butler".

And this stuff isn't for the purposes of blocking people on twitter - it's for the purpose of allowing students to pre examine what they're getting themselves into. So, you know, this entire hollaballoo about it being a blacklist or a harrassment list or something - nonesense! It's a lot more like 'deep freeze' where you collect pertinent information than it's any sort of automatic filtering machine.

For the record: The Beaverton is a satirical news site. Much like The Onion, except Canadian.

  • Holger-Dane

And of course it happens to someone like Peterson. Pure coincidence, surely.

Way to "fight" fake news (they really only want to fight the portion that hurts the left) by indexing a site that's 100% satire.

As I drowned, as I gasped as the waves swept over me, as the water filled my lungs, I threw my arms at the shore. Whether it be 10 feet or 10 miles, it mattered little. The 200 standing in the sand so far away yet so close. And I yelled to them help, save me from my wickedness, my desire to shower with a woman a barely knew, to gaze upon her with one eye and beg feminism with the other.

We like to call things we disagree with “social cancers”. People dislike social cancers and often inveigh against them. [..]

I wonder if a good definition for “social cancer” might be any group that breaks the rules of cooperative behavior that bind society together in order to spread more quickly than it could legitimately achieve, and eventually take over the whole social body.

But society is very big [citation needed]. Long before a group can take over society, it reaches a size where it needs to develop internal structure and rules about interaction between group members. If you collect a bunch of people and tell them to abandon all the social norms like honesty, politeness, respect, charity, and reason in favor of a cause – then the most likely result is that when your cause tries to develop some internal structure, it will be overrun by a swarm of people who have abandoned honesty, politeness, respect, charity, and reason.

[..] The political communists, the kind we got in the US, mostly stuck to the rules. But look what happened to them. They got all excited about how the governing power structures were evil and needed to be destroyed. They set up various organizations dedicated to destroying the governing power structures. And people proceeded to decide that the governing power structures of those organizations were evil and needed to be destroyed. As a result, Communist parties were rent by constant factional warfare and they never got around to destroying the society they lived in at all.

And look what happened to Mr. Clymer. His whole spiel was about throwing out the virtue of charity – how when people have been accused of things, we should condemn them automatically, no chance it’s wrong, false accusations rarer than comet strikes. And then…

We have a lot of proverbs about this sort of thing. “Hoist with his own petard”. “Taste of your own medicine.” “A trap of your own making.” Jesus said “He who lives by the sword will die by the sword” – and it has been pointed out to me that Jesus himself lived as a carpenter and died by being nailed to a piece of wood, so there’s that.

Or since we’ve gradually meandered back on to the topic of sexism, there’s an ancient Sexist proverb that seems highly apropos: “Bro, if she’ll cheat with you, she’ll cheat on you”.

And in the same way, someone who will be a jerk for you will be a jerk to you. My disagreement with Arthur was about his willingness to tolerate jerks in his movement. He thinks it will help him win. But someone who is a jerk to men will, by and large, also be a jerk to women. Someone who is a jerk to men’s rights activists will, by and large, also be a jerk to feminists. They may not do so immediately, if it doesn’t serve their self-interest to do so. But in private, or as soon as the chance comes up, jerkitude will out.

The fuck, we have a president that uses his authority as a way to abuse women and we don't say shit. But a dude took the chance and jumped in a shower and we act like he's the devil?

Get the fuck out of here, he read the situation way wrong and didn't do anything horrible in comparison to what is clearly ignored in this sub because it would go against the handlers that seem to be manipulating this sub anymore.

How sad that this is where the sub has gone.

Also, Neogaf reacts to FBI investigation into #gamergate http://archive.is/aDLB0; this comment is gold:

People here on GAF should keep this in mind next time they are thinking about shitting on a woman who comes forward to speak about the misogyny and sexism in video games culture.

(in hindsight, I probably should just have made a self-post, but with all the neogaf threads, I don't think people would want more).

The best part? Even if he was completely innocent, it wouldn't have mattered. He curated an environment that wouldn't care because they "believe women" even if they are obviously lying.

I think it says a lot about his character he didn't even man up and write a Weinstein-esque apology. Dude just legit ran away from his problems by saying he was going to release a statement and then went dark after burying the whole website. Most people wouldn't need all this time to release a statement, because they would of just said "She's lying, I never did that". Then again, most people don't sexually assault people.

I'm sorry, but as someone who had to realize a few years ago we were posting in support of RiceGum over similar allegations that this place is seriously fucked up and only deciding to bring this up because it's someone we disagree with.

An extremely privileged multi-millionaire who gets paid to play a game in public is a hero for performing a token gesture in front of an audience that requires no personal sacrifice and does nothing to change or raise awareness of the problem he's only pretending to champion as a smokescreen for the that he's only making a public ass out of himself because the president dented his ego.

You, however, are a villain worse than Hitler and Voldemort combined because you publically stated that you don't think it's a good idea for journalists to publish 24 articles in 48 hours repeating the same rhetoric about what an awful, disgusting garbage fire of a human being you, the person consuming their content, are.

When, irl, were nerds heroes, exactly? Or does snowflake think movies and internet banter equal reality?

NFL are heroes? Someone either hasn't been paying attention or believes hero means, "destroying the franchise for weakly connected, if not outright spurious reasons".

  • Apotheosis276
    3 points Oct 21,2017, 2:22pm

Never really understood the nerd/jock divide. If you're so smart, why aren't you physically fit, why do you have a poor diet, why can't you make yourself look good? That's what I asked myself at some point in my life and it turned out to be not so hard to have it all.

I would even argue that an unbalanced person in that regard is almost always a corrupted, sick person, in a way. Avoid physical activity like the plague and you lose your connection to the real, the limitations of your body and the mind in real time that may be forgotten in the immersion of abstract thought.

The Greek philosophers held physical activity in high regard:

Because our city does not practise military training in public, (7) that is no reason for neglecting it in private, but rather a reason for making it a foremost care. For be you assured that there is no contest of any sort, nor any transaction, in which you will be the worse off for being well prepared in body; and in fact there is nothing which men do for which the body is not a help. In every demand, therefore, which can be laid upon the body it is much better that it should be in the best condition; since, even where you might imagine the claims upon the body to be slightest—in the act of reasoning—who does not know the terrible stumbles which are made through being out of health? It suffices to say that forgetfulness, and despondency, and moroseness, and madness take occasion often of ill-health to visit the intellectual faculties so severely as to expel all knowledge (8) from the brain. But he who is in good bodily plight has large security. He runs no risk of incurring any such catastrophe through ill-health at any rate; he has the expectation rather that a good habit must procure consequences the opposite to those of an evil habit; (9) and surely to this end there is nothing a man in his senses would not undergo.... It is a base thing for a man to wax old in careless self-neglect before he has lifted up his eyes and seen what manner of man he was made to be, in the full perfection of bodily strength and beauty. But these glories are withheld from him who is guilty of self-neglect, for they are not wont to blaze forth unbidden.

One could think that nothing changed at all did it?The frat boys from South Park come to mind, "jocks" found a new tool to establish a hierarchy, that's mostly it.

my biggest issue with this is in revenge of the nerds the nerds broke into a home, installed secret cameras to film naked women, sold those pictures to the general public including people that knew those women, and one of the nerds even raped a woman.

whereas the jocks forcibly evicted the nerds from community housing

Oh yeah, those football players making millions for playing a game are real heroes for taking a knee during an anthem. It's like the rich person equivalent of hashtag activism.

Nerds vs jocks is genuinely the stupidest fucking thing that died in the 90's. Every jock games now, at the very least they play sports games or CoD, there isn't a divide anymore.

Jocks continue to bully people to the point of suicide, while nerds looks at video game titties.

Yeah, Nerds are the real bad guys here.

    The fuck is Blossom?

When, irl, were nerds heroes, exactly? Or does snowflake think movies and internet banter equal reality?

NFL are heroes? Someone either hasn't been paying attention or believes hero means, "destroying the franchise for weakly connected, if not outright spurious reasons".

  • Apotheosis276

So, me wanting ethics in gaming journalism, no favour-trading and less politics when it comes to what can be in a game makes me a bad person.

Cool, I always wanted to be the villain.

I told her she knows nothing, I play games and I watch football. One of these groups do not have a domestic abuse, rape, violence, or sexual harassment problems every year from every level. God I fucking hated that knee shit to, it made shit uncomfortable too cause no one is trying to hear about politics during football

Well from what I've heard and in my own experience, we've been the bad guys since the pacman days. We were either committing mass murder or satanists or perverts or whatever the fuck else.

What happened to that point in time we had awhile ago, where people were starting to realise all this moral panic bullshit about gamers was bullshit?
