One of my players' first experience with combat was almost getting killed by a goblin. The very first attack roll of the first round of combat was a Nat 20 on the goblin's attack roll. The player survived with 2 hp.

I like how the bone flys away but he only rolled a 1

This has been my party's combat sequences thus far.

First person to attack always ends up unconscious.

When my players hit but roll low damage I tend to narrate something about knocking chain links loose from the enemy armor or striking a blow that knocks him out of position or something, instead of "your sword barely penetrates his flesh and he feels a singular pinprick. One damage."

I'm not sure if this is the best solution but whatever.

Tfw you roll a nat 20, and only roll ones for damage

my first entailed me rolling a 1, and knocking the paladin unconscious with an eldritch blast

My first DnD combat ever saw me soloing an ogre. It was great. Divine smite is great. Paladin ftw. Deus Vult.

Critical fail! The sward brakes and the sharts shoot into your eyes, and you are now permanently blind.
