This is why you don't buy cheap chairs. A cheap chair without a solid metal baseplate under the seat might result in an early and swift colorectal exam. It's the first thing I check before using a chair long term.

I should not have been on the phone assistating a customer when looking at this. Laughed way to hard
you've got a friend in me..
Clean that sign, yo!
I like the way it says tips are not expected rather than not allowed I think this is a good way of doing it, excellent waiting staff can still be given extra if the customer feels they want to.
We had one in Chicago. Servers didn't like it and it didn't last.
They’ve actually studied this, and the restaurants that have tried it have failed more often than normal tipping restaurants, and a high proportion of them went back to tipped wages. The staff ended up preferring the tip system and the customers didn’t like the higher sticker prices. It sucks, but it’s probably a bad business move for this restaurant.
Also that isn't true with being paid than industry standards. Its widely known servers make way more then any other staff because of tips, its just brings them down inline with the cooks.
For small and not too crowded places I can see this working in favor of the waiters but in really crowded restaurants they can make lots of money with tips.
ITT: people not realizing waiters make more in a tip-based system.
I’d rather tip. If the service is stellar, I pay more.
Tipping is a flawed system. There's a ton of research that shows this, but instead of that, here is a list of proven techniques to increase your tips if that is how you make your money:
Okay OP, what were the prices for food then. And how was the service. The one place I have eaten that had a similar sign had ridiculous prices and the service was actually meh. They went out of business in like 6 months.
Does no one realize the Severs lose out in this situation. I easily made $25-$30 an hour when I was a waiter in college. No way the restaurant is paying that in salary.
If they are truly getting all the benefits like healthcare and 401k...thats great. If not, they can make wayyy more getting tips. anyone who has been a waiter knows this.
I see this argument all the time on Reddit. Everyone I know who is a server (admittedly not a lot of people) take the jobs specifically for the tips. If you work in an upscale restaurant or serve drinks you can make hundreds a night.
As someone who's lived off tips for the majority of my life, I know with a certainty that if I had to get a non tip job, I would need at least $15/hr..full time, no breaks.. to be able to survive monthly with what I have to pay out (some I could cut, but the difference would be small).
But I also work hard to earn said tips and I know every time that it's not assured I'll get any.
If the cost of living continues to go up, and pay wages don't get better across the board... I'll be hard pressed.
I also have never applied for food stamps or assistance, and only collected unemployment once between jobs for six months... so I try not to use the system...
But as someone who doesn't have career skills or education to go above and beyond these means; I appreciate every customers generosity tenth fold.
what restaurant is this? would like to see prices and how they compare to other "tipped" restaurants in the area
My friend opened a restaurant and put similar text on the bottom of the menu.
She got tons of negative yelp reviews saying it was a try-hard attempt at seeming "better than everyone else". And that they should just be a pricier restaurant without stating it.
I have no idea why people took such offense to an attempt at doing the right thing.
Cheap people don’t tip.
Many restaurants in the US have tried this. Usually it doesn’t work because the average American will purchase less if the items are more expensive on the menu even if they don’t have to tip.
This has been tried by multiple restaurants in the Seattle area, unfortunately most of them have reverted back to the tipping model.
Good thing they are because I wouldn't tip shit if I was seated at a filthy table like that.
I'm okay with this in principle, but shitty plastic stand full paragraph dirty with food smears laminated preachy bullshit on my table would annoy me.
Sounds like a great way to make less money.
I spent 10 years working for a low base rate of pay, as little as $1.85 plus tips. I can say with 100% certainty that working for tips made me work harder and be more courteous than my fellow employees. I would sometimes make twice as much as fellow waiters. We had a policy of party of 6 or more and gratuity would be automatically added. I would override it almost every time and leave it up to the guest to tip based on my service. I can honestly say only one time did I get less than 20%.
Wow, it's hard to believe so many people are defending tips here. Yes, you can make more money with tips than with normal wages. Yes, it's a strong motivator to provide good service. The restaurant is still not paying their employees. When I was a server, it was common to work without any breaks for fear of not making enough money to justify the hours spent at work. Employee is working, employer pays them for their time, end of story. None of this "smile for money" crap.
Finally. Don’t make me manage your staff for you through the tip. Do that yourself, let me relax and pay a transparent fee for my meal.
Great, so they’ll make less. Great job 👍
That means the best waiter in the restaurant gets the same wage as the worst, which is unfair to the best. I would not be surprised if the service completely sucks at this place.
VISUAL PROOF: just look at that filthy sign! Disgusting.
TFW minimum wage goes up so you get no paid breaks and more of your tip money is taken from you and given to the staff in the back
I made $20 An hour on slow days in fast casual, well over that during busy times. Are you paying that? If not you aren't going to keep good servers.
I don’t get Americans’ tipping culture either. Since when do you have to tip expected service to someone who’s hired to do exactly so?
They need to raise the wage of the servers, calculating how much to tip for is putting extra mental cost on a otherwise clear cut deal of a transaction.
I don’t want a different service based on my tipping range and I don’t want servers wage fluctuates based on how many well of and/or kind-hearted people have visited the venue. Good service should be standardized, so should it’s pay.
You can still tip if the service is truly exceptional, but it should not have been a indispensable part of servers’ wage.
I'm very generous with my tips (50% sometimes if they're impeccable). But if including the tip with the menu price means a shitty, rude waiter is still gonna get his, I will not patronize those restaurants, period.
I like how it’s considered “catching up”... I don’t know why we should give a shit what the rest of the world is doing.
Honestly, cant understand how the tipping to compensate for slave wages is legal in USA.
Can we see the menu prices?
Unless this is Black Star Co-op, they too do this.
I would still tip too, that the thing
Catching up with the rest of the world means no tip...only places with lot of Americas require tips (and some exceptions)
Need to say “tipping is not allowed” and remove the tip line from the receipt - cause people are still gonna feel pressure to tip otherwise.
They’ve tried it many times and then go back to tipping because they end up making more on tips then the restaurant pays them.
I bet the servers are thrilled.../s
The Modern in NYC does this. My $500 bill for 2 was slightly made better when I read a statement on the bottom that said they don’t accept tips.
What restaurant? I go to Austin once a month, would love to visit
I’m curious to see how that’s working out for everyone there.
This is standard in San Francisco now... $15 an hour minimum, healthcare, vacation, and sick days are required for all employees.....except service staff (including those at a register check you out ..wtf) still expect a 20% tip
I’m curious what the prices would be. Any chance there’s a menu pic we could see?
Sorry, Austin, you're not first. It was already tried in NYC in 2015.
Sounds like the opposite of taking gratuity...like they know people are cheap and they wont tip. But if they wana take it I'll let them but give no extra
That's cool but I'm still tipping
They still gone get a tip this ‘Mercia goddamnit
Where is this in Austin?
I wonder what they consider "higher than industry standards".
Why is this not written into federal law?
Would that this could be worldwide
I mean working for a tip generally makes better service cause they have to really earn that tip, but yeah I still see why other countries just pay people normally
Yeah in Chile we don't do that much of tipping. Actuslly I think we never do lmao
If the signs are dirty I'd hate to think what the kitchen looks like
I’m in Austin right now
Just came back from Japan and they do it best there.Tipping is considered rude at most places, as exemplary service is considered the norm. Pretty much the opposite here in the US.Shitty service and most waitstaff expect big tips.
Sadly I think if restaurants raise their prices to do this than people will just eat out less often.
This is great because there's certainty in wages, and the guys in back are fairly compensated. Where I used to work, busboys supposedly got a portion of waitstaff's tip, but dishwashers, prep, and cooks got nada.
And you are still a jerk if you don't tip.
How is the service at this restaurant since the server is no longer working for tips?
Good. I prefer this over tipping. Tipping puts the onus onto the customer when it really should be on the owner.
I bet the servers are assholes at this place. I mean it's Austin..so more asshole than normal I mean.
So no tipping?
Yea but what is the wage they are being paid? Just bc a sign says they're paid well doesnt mean they actually are.
I'd like to see the prices on the menu
This is worse for workers and customers. To give workers 20% of the bill they have to up the prices 26%ish.
Please put tipping is not expected first.
A Joe's Crab Shack did this near me.
The staff fucking revolted and they went back to the tip wages.
Nobody liked the menu prices being 20% higher and it took money out of the servers' pockets on a nightly basis. I bet nearly any European server would rather wait tables in the US if they saw what you can clear in a night. Servers generally make a living wage, so stop trying to act like they don't.
Thai Fresh is the bomb
This weirdly makes me want to tip more...
There's a place near me that does a version of this. Instead of adjusting prices they just force a 18% service fee. Absolutely worst service in town.
Conversely, the last time I was in London it seemed more and more places were starting to expect you to tip.
Joe's crab shack tried it. It failed, but their menu prices stayed high after topping started again.
I would much rather see a sign like that than when I was up around Seattle and receipts would have a line item for a $1 that said $15 minimum wage. wtf is this. You could just factor your labor into your cost but instead you want to make it clear this is why it costs more. Learn to run a fucking business. Labor is a part of your cost just as it always has been. Everyone knows it. Don't be a dick.
Of course now down here around Portland places have a 22% service charge added. I suppose a portion of that goes to the back of the house that tipping doesn't otherwise cover but still 22% is insane. I spoke to the waiter who said he loved it. Wouldn't tell me what he was making but he said he got insurance, 401k PTO and sick. I prodded a little about wage and I think he makes around $60k which sounds about right. I know a few servers at similar fine dinner restaurants clearing $80k
What restaurant was it? I live down here
This is fine with me. If you get paid less than minimum I'll give a good tip. You get paid like this place pays employees then don't expect a tip. As a customer I'm fine with either.
Where I work we split the tips between boh and foh.
If you ever look the history and reasoning behind tips you'll find it's basically tied to US slavery. Kinda dark, and can't still believe businesses and States still allow it.
Be better if it ended with, “therefore, please do not tip”.
I’m willing to bet everyone that goes there is still tipping just cause it’s what is customary and the staff still sees non tippers as cheap.
Now post the menu prices.
I really hate having to deal with tipping, I'd definitely eat out more if they'd just pay their people properly and removed tipping.
This is very wholesome. Here have an upvote.
I live in the Austin area, I wish I knew what restaurant this is so that I can dine there.
So... no tips? Like in most of the rest of the world? And if pay is based directly on menu pricing, if there's no customers, means no pay for the servers, just like it is for business owners?
If I saw this sign id probably tip more.
I'm all for diners no longer subsidizing restaurant owners by paying part of the wages of restaurant employees. Good one for this truly progressive eatery.
How about not mentioning it at all? I doubt the prices will go up by more than a few dollars per dish. Or am I completely off?
I take it this isn't Sonic
Wonder how fast those tables get turned though.
The fact that labor costs weren't originally factored into their prices is a bit concerning...
Bet the service isnt as good as somewhere where servers count on tips.
When your getting paid no matter what, you do the bare minimum that requires you to not be fired.
Interesting because service staff make more when they’re salary is tipped based
Ironically, they probably make less per hour than places with tipping.
A BBQ joint nearby did the same thing, and the locals freaked the fuck out, and not in a good way.
I think it’s fantastic, but apparently selfish assholes don’t think that food service workers should expect a reasonable paycheck.
Tipping is not expected EVER.
When I was in Switzerland I unexpectedly came across one of the advantages of the no-tip system I had never considered. In the tip system, where each table is assigned to a waiter, if you need something you have to either wait for your waiter to appear or else get another waiter to summon your waiter. In the no-tip system, it doesn't matter. Any waiter can serve any table. Need to get going? Ask any waiter for your check.
Servers make way way more from tips than from whatever this wage would be.
Every time i see this argument I know the person has no clue how a restaurant is run
I'll bet that a cheeseburger at this place costs $14 and a beer costs $7. If I'm right, something tells me that this place isn't going to last very long.... even in Austin.
Excellent. Tipping culture has a lot of problems. One being that pretty young waitresses pull in more than middle aged ones with families to support.
This is way better than the $2.13/hour the lobbyists imposed on servers.
This has failed many times over and I know numerous people who would much rather make their tips then make whatever hourly wage this restaurant is paying them. I have a hard time thinking that this place is paying their servers over $35 dollars an hour and I know people who make well over that on a good night. This is almost disingenuous tbh. If the restaurant wanted their employees to be making more per hour, all they had to do is bump their base wage. And don't even get me started on profit margins of certain high end restaurants and fine dining establishments.
Fuck this noise. I will still tip and if I was the server, I would expect to get tipped.
Well I've got a tip for you anyway!
Uhhh...... Don't pee on Supermans' cape!
I hate restaurants that ask for tips when they are paid like normal workers
As a young adult, my dream was to open a restaurant. I watched every episode of Good Eats, and taught myself every cooking technique I could. My first real job was at Starbucks, but then I got a job at a restaurant. I immediately realized just how FUCKED the tipping system is and how absolutely horrible customers can be about the whole arrangement. I vowed that if and when I open my own place, to never employ a single person who has to rely on tips for their wages...
And that's why I load trucks for a living...
Lol, but seriously, I still stick by that vow. I still cook in my free time and who knows what my future holds. But a traditional restaurant with servers working for tips will not be a part of it.
I love this, tipping is not a wage! and, us government, should not be taxed, or taxable!
Lol I’ll wait to see the differences in relative regulation, bureaucratic and different tax costs for world businesses and the US. No wonderful Spanish restaurant I ate in for 4 months could stay open in Texas because of regulations they do not have to follow.
The world's largest economy and the richest country in the history of the world, where its citizens enjoy relatively high wages is so backward.
A good shop with good tips is the only reason someone worth the fuck will do the job, soon as the money stops that person will go get another job and they will most likly be replaced with someone who isnt as helpful shall we say.
Put up with customers bullshit for a standard wage and no tips?
No thanks... Or i wont be as nice about it as im not required to be as nice as they aint tipping me.
The potentail of a nice tip is the only reason servers dont murder people.
Great, so when will I be charged to take a leak? Like the rest of the world..........
The tip culture in the US is really stupid. Paying a fair wage to their employees is the basic responsibility for employers, why allow them to shift their own responsibility to customers.
I assume the service sucks.
Right. The rest of the world doesn’t get good service. Why should the USA?
So employees are on a fixed income then, plus they don't have to try and be good at their work, since they are getting paid the same anyway. Nice.
Unfortunately tipping is becoming regular around most of the world these days. Tipping culture is bs
I worked as a bartender & server all through college and shortly after I graduated. I've done restaurant, sports bar, upscale dining and nightclubs and I know from experience that if you're good at your job, you make great money for working part time hours, generally 15-25/hr depending on the day/time. I've been to countries where tipping "isn't normal" and guess what? The service was terrible and the ticket times took longer than an average American restaurant.
American people might be more guilty of self indulgence when it comes to restaurants but the experience you get from eating out in the States compared to rest of the world is far far better.
How about we pay people a living wage, and expect that people tip their servers instead of being massive douchebags?
Ahh, I see it is time for the bi-monthly "DAE think tipping is bad!" post
we factored the cost of labor into menu prices
You mean, like we should’ve been doing all along? (Restaurant manager here, come at me).
This needs to happen across the US. Tipping is a terrible tradition that biases wait staff on race and gender, encourages in-fighting and smugness, discourages professionalism and teamwork.
First. when you go to countries that don't tip, the service is horrible. Second. If you are wait staff you will lose 30%-50% of your wages. Third. If you work in the kitchen your pay won't increase.
This is how it's supposed to be though. The minimum wage isn't for people to raise their kids on it's for kids to make some money while attending school or college...........
So, in turn, we’re going to charge you $20 for that previous $5burger so we can pay bob and betty better, you don’t mind paying more right ?
Wonder what the hourly wage for wait staff is?
When I waited tables 20 years ago I averaged $15 or so.
He does Math in the bathroom all night though 😏 close enough.
I'm pretty sure this goes both ways, especially with the tattoos written in chinese.

Brandi from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills said that to Kim Richard's in season 2 I believe. It was pretty entertaining. And trashy. Loved it

That is fucking hilarious.

When you spend 3 hours meticulously drawing and shaping the branches and leaves, but then you get bored and spend two minutes finishing the trunk...
These trees are also unknown as “upside down” trees because it looks like the roots are coming out of the top.
Source: I’ve seen these in person at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and they drone on about them in the safari.
Who's the photographer? Its a nice shot
There are smaller baobob species on the mainland of Africa too.
Saw them in southern Kenya and northern Kenya. The seeds are sold as snacks; they’re sold dried and have powdery exterior with a strong sour taste. Not everyone likes the flavor, but I liked it. Good for making a lemonade type drink.
How old are these trees approximately?
How do they grow? Does the trunk grow straight up as a column first and then do the branches sprout after it reaches a certain height? Or do the branches sprout early and then get pushed up?
Those trees have bodies like a cyclist.
We have a variety of these that grow in the north of my state (Western Australia). They're so beautiful and I'm obsessed. Great shot.
Those look like they'd be easy AF to split... No branches getting in the way.
Baobab, the tree that grows upside down.

You should mention how your gay adopted sister with autism took this photo when nobody showed up for her 16th birthday party and she doesn't think it's very good.
Better watch out. Those things will fuck up your tiny planet.
This little girl is too adorable. How cute.
Oof my heart, cross post to r/aww
He even got the height right.
I've played so much bioshock recently this reminded me of a big daddy and a little sister, and I couldn't stop saying 'aww'
While the cosplayer was not a real soldier, it didn't matter to little Ana. In her eyes this was The Hero. She had seen videos of him at home. Touching his hand ignited in her a belief that she could one day become one too. That was so many years ago, but as Ana donned her exo-skeleton, which she affectionately called 'Spartan', she knew that moment was connected. Hoisting her rifle, she began to march towards the drop-ship hangar.
Would you like to know more?
He really has the slow, methodical movement down. Impressed that he doesn’t even break character for the little girl

Master Chief is the defender and protector of humanity. Children need not fear him.
The heroic mannerisms are palpable

When I was a kid I got to go see the American Gladiators in person. After the show the Gladiators would hang out and sign autographs for fans. Those Gladiators looked like GIANTS to me. I would probably start crying if I saw this crazy giant space man as a kid, so credit to her.

The Legend with Zelda.
One of the few actors that I genuinely miss.
Not for appearing in things, but just being around and getting snippets of his life.
Makes me sad he's not here anymore.
He is truly missed ❤️
He was a truly amazing and inspirational dude
I genuinely wonder what it was like having robin as a father. Miss him every single day.
This will never not get an up door from me. Two lovely humans.
Looks like the juice lady in Barcelona
Posting Robin Williams is such easy karma. I will always upvote this man
I first came across Zelda Williams in Were the World Mine. No idea who she was at the time, nor her relations, but I crushed on her so hard for such a long time. She's amazing.
Funnily enough they were actually playing Pokémon.
Robin Williams and Kuvira
She worked on an episode of Criminal Minds last year.
This is a Nintendo ad.
Classic pic at this point but will most likely get removed for R1.
I would have thought his love for his daughter would have been enough to want to live a long as possible, but that just shows how much I don't know about depression. His performances in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society were his best moments on screen and they were nothing about comedy.
I'm crying now. Damn Robin.
Only celebrity death I've ever mourned as a personal loss. Still chokes me up.
seeing pics of Robin Williams always makes me so sad that we lost him.
Possibly playing Zelda on those Nintendo handhelds
Younger generations will have no idea how much of an impact this single person had on the world. When he died the whole world stopped for a moment and was collectively sadder.
Wow I haven’t seen this 328 times or anything
The Genie and Kuvira. Part of my childhood and part of my kids' childhood.
I remember this guy making me laugh my ass off the first time I watched Mrs.Doubtfire. It's not what he would say, it's how he said it...an outstanding comedian actor and person.
They look so happy and in the moment !
I'm not crying, you're crying!
Its LINK. When will people learn!
He was alive when 4 swords was out I'm pretty sure. He could have helped the Princess save herself!! Hehe
Aw man, Robin's death hit me hard. As a young kid I would watch his movies like Jumanji and Mrs. Doubtfire over and over. My parents wouldn't allow me to watch his stand up comedy because apparently it contained strong language, but I would still watch it whenever I had the chance. He's really the one who inspired me to get into comedy. It was a tough time trying to make it, but Robin always remained an inspiration. Eventually I got to the point where I would laugh at my own jokes harder than I ever laughed at any of Robin's material, and it was then that I knew I had surpassed him as a comedian. I'm sure he would be proud to see what his example and inspiration helped me achieve, and I know he's smiling down from heaven at me every time I get on stage!
Good to see him hanging out
zelda is a boy and you play as him
How can he kill himself and leave his daughter??
A very sick man.
Did they ever come out and reveal that it was autoerotic asphyxiation?
Just watched Hook with my kids. I miss this man
I am offended this isn't a gif.
Genius, Lloyd. Sheer genius.
I need to see this in motion
Take my money!
How is this not a gif? 🤯
There's also a Nic Cage variety.
And here's one with Ahnold.
So far I’ve seen Jason with a machete, and a dog waging its tail. I like this one the best.

All good until you get pulled over for obstruction of view and end up getting shot.
I'm thinking r/ATBGE .
Love this. But I would probably get distracted by it and crash my car.
Reflection of the tree makes it look like the wrestler is laying on it.
That is beautiful
So, you drive backwards?
That looks pretty gay, actually.
Here’s it in motion if anyone’s interested
He should have safety glasses on tho
Looks like a job that needs good workplace coverage. pieces of shattered glass could just fly back at your eyes.
If I did this job I would accidentally toss the finished glass onto the done pile.
The extra bits on the ground, that's what glass hot dogs are made from. Bet you'll never eat one of those again.
AND he’s rocking VLONE this guys a legend
What do they do with the leftovers?
No eye protection, his wrists are completely exposed, and by the look of the pointy off cuts I would be wearing genital and leg protection as well. At least he has closed in shoes.
He’s been doing that for hours and hasn’t made a dent to the glass on the left....
The Craigslist ad said "Circlejerk $12.50/hour", I thought what the hell.... and here I am, cutting glass.
I wouldn't do that without arm sleeves.
