As a guy who was in high school during the Bush years, I have to say, Reddit's absolute certainty that they hated him while in office, and that he was a terrible president, is always somewhat suspect to me.

I hated him when he was in office, too, but I wasn't old enough or experienced enough or educated enough to understand his policies or actions at any meaningful level, beyond mostly parroting what I heard others who hated him say.

Since there are a lot of (probably most) Redditors who are younger than me, many quite a bit, I have to question whether our agreed upon opinions on Bush are completely correct, or if we're just remembering our feelings of youthful outrage.

He also fabricated a need for war in the Middle East, destabilized the entire region, caused the deaths of millions of innocents, and has destroyed an entire generation's (if not several generations') hopes for peace and prosperity.

But, he gives out hard candies at big funerals. Good guy.

Why exactly is he giving Michelle the candy and not Melania or Hillary? Is it like saying to Obama, "your wife is sweet as this candy, so you better watch your back mister". What tone lies beneath this action. Is it something private? Why is it connected with funerals? I have so many questions and no answers, this is 9/11 all over

Yes politically the Bush family has done some atrocious things in the past. But, I do think this sort of thing is needed; even though different parties, they still respect each other. That is something we need in politics more so than ever, but because of trump, the divide has become even worse.

  • Sacred_Silly_Sack

The craziest thing, yet, about growing old is seeing other people grow really old. When I was a kid I would watch TV and there would be all these old people that I didn't know about, and it didn't effect me at all that they died, I'd never seen them young.

But now that I'm getting to be middle aged it's so shocking to see someone like Bob Dole, who I remember giving speeches on TV as a kid, now almost incapacitated by age saying goodbye to someone else I vividly remember who's died.

It makes sense that kids are so reckless, mortality is really difficult to grasp before you're 30, IMHO.

They say where were you when democracy was born, now still, watching old democracy die. Never again will there be a legacy such as the old, Stalwart Republicans. They truly believed in what the stood for. There was much decency in their time. Not just posturing for internet points and media pandering. Mad respect! Such a time when news was delivered succinctly. Driving home what was going on with our nation. Never again will America be so not connected. Every second is vitreole and anger. I long for the days when a politician could be bipartisan. How hard must it be to watch it all fade away. Bless you Bob Dole and to the Bush Family, many thanks!!! We won’t forget!!

Bush and Dole ran against each other in the 1988 Republican presidential primary in a bitter battle, where Dole famously told Bush: 'Stop lying about my record.'

Bush ultimately won the nomination and Dole stayed in the Senate.

But nonetheless, the two men forged a working relationship and maintained a decades-old friendship.

On Saturday, he reflected on their relationship, telling CNN's Ana Cabrera that his passing was an end of an era, as Bush was the last World War II veteran to serve as president.

"I believe there are certain qualities that veterans have, and when Bush was president, I think about three-fourths of Congress were veterans and we would stick together and work together across the aisle. And President Bush was a bipartisan president. So we got quite a lot done."

Dole helped shepherd The Americans with Disabilities Act through Congress, which Bush signed as president.

The 95 year old can no longer walk. An aide lifted him from behind so the former senator could be upright to salute Bush. Dole then sat in his wheelchair for a few moments, blinking back tears.

Deepest respect to both of these men!

    1 points Dec 04,2018, 3:41pm

I remember when he was running for president, people wouldn't vote for him (and the media intensified this) because he was too old and they thought he might not make it through two terms. Well, Bob Dole lasted plenty long.

  • SanityContagion
    1 points Dec 04,2018, 3:43pm

I'm amazed at the sudden outpouring of respect George HW Bush after his death. Even NPR is being very complimentary. I'm really surprised.

  • NSYK
    134 points Dec 04,2018, 3:16pm

It's like watching the death of traditional conservative Republicans. I respect the hell out of these men.

  • Sacred_Silly_Sack
    1 points Dec 04,2018, 4:20pm

The craziest thing, yet, about growing old is seeing other people grow really old. When I was a kid I would watch TV and there would be all these old people that I didn't know about, and it didn't effect me at all that they died, I'd never seen them young.

But now that I'm getting to be middle aged it's so shocking to see someone like Bob Dole, who I remember giving speeches on TV as a kid, now almost incapacitated by age saying goodbye to someone else I vividly remember who's died.

It makes sense that kids are so reckless, mortality is really difficult to grasp before you're 30, IMHO.

    Respect.

Weird to get old. Watching people who used to make the day-to-day news now struggle just to do simple things we take for granted. People this old who still show gusto for life and have healthy mind should be celebrated and respected. Me? I'd just be going through the motions, so hope I go long before I get to this state of needing assistance.

We won’t forget!!

i don't want to shit on a vet in a wheel chair, or one in a casket, but neither one of these men are honorable, or should be remembered in a good light.

The more you learn about both of them, the more you realize they helped destabilize our society and did real harm to millions of people.

I applaud dole's fortitude, and respect, but he is not a good man, neither is the person he is saluting. We can't just erase peoples crimes once they are old or dead.

I still haven't beaten Getting Over It =(. I keep getting stuck at that little tunnel that goes upwards and you have to grab the lights. It's so early in the game and I've watched a few speed run videos but I just can't get it. Time to try again though because fuck you Bennet Foddy, you genius little piece of shit.

Too bad Just Cause 3 has a memory leak on PC they refused to fix. Don't buy Just Cause 4 till we know it will run on a rig first. And no the solution shouldn't be just add more ram so you game takes longer to crash...like what they said about jc3.

This technology is going to get pretty awesome when Disney nails down the right code to take their already computer generated characters and feed their behaviors, as defined for a film, directly into the animatronic control software, without the need for any custom choreography of their movements. Like upload the source for Toy Story, and a Buzz Lightyear robot can reenact any scene.

In the preview video we hear from the Imagineers working on the trackless dark ride, which will include the first recreations of Belle and the Beast in animatronic form. We see at least three versions of Belle in the video, in her blue dress, red cloak, and golden gown.

We also see that the ride vehicles will be 10-seat trackless tea cups, which will carry guests through the Beast's castle, including a dance with Belle and the Beast in the castle's ballroom.

Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to open in spring 2020 at Tokyo Disneyland

Does she want a toilet setup for Christmas? And who'll be installing it?

A few years ago, my sister and brother-in-law gave us a bathroom under-sink cabinet for Christmas but we had recently installed a new sink in our old cabinet and didn't want to get rid of it. So we asked them to return the cabinet setup.

This is amazing! Not so extreme but I've been doing a similar thing with a book I buy my dad each Christmas that he always used to manage to guess and it slowly morphed into using various boxes and other ways to hide it. It's become a running joke now but that bastard still usually guesses right.

Chair height low water toilets are awesome. Pick up a seat bidet, too! I have a seat bidet with heated seat and water, light, and remote. It’s fabulous!

This is fantastic. I went the other way, once, form-fitting the gift wrapping so it was obvious, like in the old Staples commercial. The gift was a spatula, there's no better way to say "I love you."
