It's around 40kms from my home in Shaanxi province, China. Near "Li Mountain." The road isn't officially open yet, so there's nothing on the road apart from construction workers and equipment. The 37'c weather wasn't nice to bike in, and I ran out of water. There was nowhere to replenish so I had to turn around and head home about 15% away from the peak. No trees meant no shade to rest in either. I got schooled.

  • PinaPari - 37 points - 3 years ago

Daaaamn. That's a beautiful road. I'll bet the downhill is a blast!

Side questions: 1. Are those solar panels on the side of a couple of the hills?2. What are the black shapes that are lined on the opposing side of the hills?

  • BackdoorDan - 7 points - 3 years ago

Just left hanoi last night(15 hours later and I'm still on this fucking sleeper train)... I was very tempted to do what you did but the traffic scared me away, what was the guy's reaction when he finally understood what you were trying to do?

  • tacknosaddle - 2 points - 3 years ago

I make it a point to do this as well when in developing countries. I did that in Hanoi too but my favorite was the homemade sidecar on a BMX in Manila where the brake was a piece of metal that pushed against the tire.

    Brompton folding bikes!

They're kind of cool, one of the bike shops near where I live sell them and I got to ride one, alot smoother than you'd think. The price tag is ridiculous though, each one's over $1000, you can get a pretty legit touring bike for that kind of money.

  • Its_free_and_fun - 2 points - 3 years ago

Nice. I like it, looks very solid for a folding.

Why fold it before locking it, though?

As a car and bike fan, I must disagree on the TT bike. A LeMan 24hours car would be better and the lotus could be used as a ''normal'' road bike. http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/autopia/2012/06/AP120616120016.jpg

  • herrjoe - 15 points - 3 years ago

If anyone's interested, I compared them all to programming languages as well.

TT: C (fast but hard to handle)

    Folder: Java (portable but impractical)

    Fixie: Assembly (Just the basics)

Cruiser: Python (Slow and easy to handle)

Recumbant trike: LISP (Because neckbears neckbeards love them both)

The last two I'm not sure about. Maybe the 'cross bike is objective-C?

  • bottspetey - 8 points - 3 years ago

The trike choice seems a little odd. But I don't really know what I'd replace it with

  • down_is_up - 8 points - 3 years ago

  • lomotil - 7 points - 3 years ago

No hybrid/commuters? Could work as a Subaru.

  • Suneru893 - 3 points - 3 years ago

I like them all except recumbents... maybe VW bugs/vans?

    You could add in:

    Road bike = sports car

    track bikes = Nascar

    Fat bikes = These

    Dutch Bikes = Toyota Prius

  • antialcibiades - 3 points - 3 years ago

Cool post. But what kind of car is that besides the touring bike?

  • nathanisfat - 3 points - 3 years ago

  • Vectorbug - 8 points - 3 years ago

They're like that here in Seattle. Even the busses have an island.

Still, drivers do stupid shit and double park, people walk into the street without looking up from their phones, but I'm the one with the helmet.

  • lenbot - 18 points - 3 years ago

too bad that stretch is only a couple hundred yards but they sure are nice

  • Vee_Vee - 5 points - 3 years ago

  • behaaki - 3 points - 3 years ago

  • waka_flocculonodular - 2 points - 3 years ago

Eugene Oregon has that too! Nice to know you're somewhat safe.... People fuck that up though and think it's a lane

  • AnalJustice - 2 points - 3 years ago

This is how they are in Philadelphia as well.

  • z0hu - 2 points - 3 years ago

in san francisco they have stretches like this http://i.imgur.com/ha1ibwl.jpg .. but then a block later you need to merge into a car lane, then go into the middle of the road to avoid right turning cars. but in those little stretches it is awesome! only thing you gotta avoid are shitting hobos (ok ive only encountered one where all the bikers chose to ride on the road instead of the lane)

  • digdog303 - 2 points - 3 years ago

A bicycle lane? Must be nice.

  • jarret_g - 2 points - 3 years ago

NICE! Where I live the only bike lanes are on already wide streets that were made wide for no god damn reason. It's like the city just had a couple of extra gallons of paint and were like "how can we get a few more extra votes.....BIKE LANES!". There's still 0 cycling infrastructure or any measures to make cycling a viable transportation option besides adding bike racks to buses.

Teaching a friend how to ride is a great experience. They're nervous, they don't know what to do, and a lot of times they are embarrassed for not knowing how to this far into their life.

I love being able to share a skill like that which opens up so much freedom for another person.

You can see more details of the car.

  • iplaw - 26 points - 3 years ago

Jalopnik can ID cars pretty easily.

Looks a bit like a Mercedes CLS or CL to me. Or even the new CLA.

Something about the sloping, stubby trunk, arched side windows, and deep character lines on the side panels.

  • franklymydeer - 10 points - 3 years ago

You 100% need to post this to /r/cars or /r/autos. Those people are incredible at IDing cars based on poor quality images.

  • noondaydemon - 18 points - 3 years ago

  • acerface - 8 points - 3 years ago

Kind of looks like a Lincoln LS? Back glass and long truck sort of match up. Edit - About 90% sure of this. The lines above the wheel arches also match up.

  • jon_crz - 7 points - 3 years ago

Try r/cars. They have done it before or jalopnik.

  • treopolis - 3 points - 3 years ago

That's in Vega Baja. I used to train in that area with my friend. His family lived nearby in Morovis. Hopefully they find the person.

  • ultraStatikk - 3 points - 3 years ago

I screen captured this picture from the video. I like this angle better because it shows that the rear window is not necessarily as round as it is in the other picture. You can also see what looks like a spoiler and the taillight signature is better. To me, it looks like the taillights are longer horizontally and its clear that the license plate is in the middle because you don't see it on the bumper in either picture. The position of the third brake light is also clear.

Dude! Nice bike! I work at Cycles BiKyle, and if my eyes are not deceiving me, you have one of our decals on your top-tube! Plus that looks like one of our older team frames! Awesome!

  • iheartfirefly - 3 points - 3 years ago

That's awesome. Well done, I've never thought to match my hair to my bike. :) Seriously though, I will stop whining so much when I'm riding.

    i_yell_things vs dailing_wand16i_yell_things
    dailing_wand vs jcarpin-6jcarpin

*This one ended up being the real showdown between 1st and 2nd place

Since we used Ranked Pairs voting, it's pretty simple to find the winner. The order of people's preferences are:

    1. /u/TheOnlyMook
      Who wins every head-to-head competition
    2. /u/Kazyole
Who also handily winds every head-to-head competition; except that against the winner
    3. /u/i_yell_things
Who wins by smaller margins against all except the 1st and 2nd place winners
    4. /u/jcarpin
Narrowly beats dailing_wand, but loses all other head-to-head competitions
    5. /u/dailing_wand
Did well against 3rd and 4th, but didn't manage to win any head-to-head competitions

I've turned off contest mode, so anybody is welcome to see the voting for themselves.
2014 Reddit Jersey - Voting Time! We need your help!
Just keep in mind that the votes were tallied earlier in the day, so the exact numbers at this moment may vary a bit from when they were officially counted.

    Shoutout

Also a big thanks goes out to the mod /u/wiggee for making the voting thread happen.
Seriously the best use of CSS I've ever seen on reddit

    What now?

/u/TheOnlyMook and I will work with our vendor Podium Cycling to quickly create final designs of all the various items that we can order (jerseys, bibs, arm warmers, leg warmers, gloves, socks, caps, jackets, etc)

As soon as we can get final designs we'll put together a storefront on the reddit marketplace.
If you want to know when that is, keep an eye on /r/bicycling or sign up for the reddit jersey announce google group.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them below and I'll do my best to answer them.

  • Tripletake - 13 points - 3 years ago

  • RMCaird - 23 points - 3 years ago

I don't really see any advantages to this, other than just to do it. Surely the mechanism weighs more than spokes, the wheel won't be as strong and how on earth do you true it if you have to?!

I don't mind busses. There's 10-70 people in there. Imagine they would all use their own car.. That would be considerably more annoyance.

  • etchasketchist - 154 points - 3 years ago

The point of this ad campaign is to bring awareness to the fact that cyclists often have to pull out into traffic lanes in order to avoid obstacles in bike lanes. Irony level is zero.

  • GLam0ur - 13 points - 3 years ago

Looks like a bike to me.

  • sharkoman - 48 points - 3 years ago

Where do you expect him to pull over and pick people up? Its a big ass bus.

  • Soup_Bitch - 31 points - 3 years ago

Well, he does have to pull over for stops. There are also many "right lane bus/bike only" lanes in existence.

  • knocklessmonster - 8 points - 3 years ago

I think busses are allowed to do that, simply because they have to be on the edge of the road for the stops. At least you guys have a campaign. I can't see it in the picture, but I'm sure there's a stop nearby.

  • moriven - 5 points - 3 years ago

Its like road runner. He is painting the hack of his bus like a bike lane to trick cyclists to run into it. But they will ride right through the bus and he will be confused.

  • monumentclub - 4 points - 3 years ago

It's probably in the process of pulling in/out of a bus stop or preparing to turn right. That would be one magic bus if it could do any of those things without spending time in the bike lane.

  • trimbach - 3 points - 3 years ago

Uhh.. it's a pretty bad slogan. Indirect and vague.... Even the subtext below is more striking.

"CYCLISTS CAN TAKE A FULL LANE." Bam. There. Said it.

There's a busy street in Ottawa where that slogan wouldn't work very well either: they're specifically asking cyclists not to take the bus lane, and use the single middle car lane instead.

  • callumacrae - 1 points - 3 years ago

I had this once. I took the covers off my hoods (I have no idea what the actual words are), and some sort of nut-like object fell out. I didn't notice it until I had put the cover back on, by which point I had no idea that it had even come from the hood.

Two months later when I take the other hood apart, I realise where it has come from.

  • FoodBeerBikesMusic - 1 points - 3 years ago

Given all the various and sundry things I have "repaired", "improved' and "maintained" I don't think this conversation is exclusive to bike factories.

I know for a FACT that this happens in my workplace - someone will be taking something apart to repair, putting the parts in a bin, and "someone" will add an extra part or two...or swap bolts out for longer (or shorter) ones....

  • cholz - 14 points - 3 years ago

OK folks here's how. I ordered this and this and had a couple of these and these laying around. The battery is an 800 mAh 3 cell Lipo that provides around 12V. The whole setup draws 400 mA so with the 800 mAh battery it should last for 2 hours. The low voltage alarm is so you don't ruin your battery by forgetting to turn it off. The LED strips are waterproof and come with adhesive on the back, and they can be cut into basically whatever length you want.

Cut the strips to fit on your helmet and stick 'em down. Then solder some wires to connect them all together and solder whatever connector you need (you might need to order the female connector from HobbyKing because the batteries only come with a male connector attached) onto the main leads. Use some velcro to hold the battery and you're done. It took me about 2 hours this morning to do it all.

The only requirement for the battery is that it provides 12V. You could use a 3S (3 cell) Lipo or Lion or a 12V gel cell if you want a neck workout.

  • I_am_Fred_Astaire - 6 points - 3 years ago

Just warning, changing a helmet in any way can often void an warranty / failure liability the helmet might offer. Overall this will probably help reduce the occurrence oh your helmet actually being used to protect your head but if it still happens, and the helmet fails, they could point to what you have added and claim it wasn't their fault.

Source, I work in the bike industry and test helmets as part of my job.

That being said, I like your idea.

We had Sean's Memorial Ride yesterday, it was a 23.86 Mile Race, and there was also a 4 mile Fun Ride through our Park System. We had a great turnout and raised a good amount for Sean's Memorial Fund to help provide bikes to needy kids. Halfway through the race we stopped at the intersection where Sean passed and dedicated some things to him. The Ghost Bike was put in place by Motorless Motion of Mt. Pleasant, so a huge shout out and thank you to those guys. Ride Safe, and have fun!

EDIT: If you're wondering why I posted this under a different account, it has to do with the last one being shadowbanned for some reason (I have no idea why), so I just made a new account and moved on.

Looks like that forest has seen quite a bit of acid rain.

  • ShlawsonSays - 2 points - 3 years ago

How is riding with a dog? I've always thought it would be great but worried about them getting over excited and their tail getting caught in the chain or something

  • AdVitamAeternam - 2 points - 3 years ago

I have a Australian Cattle Dog/Australian Shepherd mix and he is amazing. Greatest dog in the world. Sooooo much energy.

I like the idea of an alien wearing bike shoes.

  • archonemis - 1 points - 3 years ago

Aero technology is so advanced that humans couldn't possibly have done it on their own.

I'm not saying it was aliens or anything.

I'm just saying that it would make sense.

  • snicklefritz - 2 points - 3 years ago

This reminds me of when I was kid of about 10 or 11. My dad took me out for a round of go-karting. I was the only kart on the track, so I was just enjoying my joy ride. The guy in the pits kept waving me in, so as I passed I waved back and smiled... for about 5 or more laps until he finally ran out in front of me and yelled to stop!

When you are in the zone, there's just no stopping you.

I actually got knocked off of my bike, and broke my helmet + had to spend some time in hospital for this very reason.

The person came up behind me on the left (English on the left of the road etc), and tried to over take me on a downhill bend, with obscured vision. I was going the speed limit anyway.

Then somebody coming the other way, also overtaking a different cyclist, meaning they nearly came together. To avoid a collision the guy overtaking me, instead chose it would be better to smash into me, hitting me into the kurb, and then drive off letting my head hit the kurb and leaving me and bike in a heap on the road.

Needless to say he did not stop, and I couldn't make a claim against him, laods of other traffic didn't stop either.

It nearly made me lose faith as people weren't stopping, but eventually somebody did. I guess the people that didn't stop didn't really understand what had happened.

In england at least if you dont stick to the left, you will get beeped and hassled until you move into the left.

I was burned by this last week. I was making a left-hand turn, so I moved to the extreme left of a two-lane street, thinking I was being considerate and a good ambassador. Unfortunately, a vehicle pretended I wasn't there and hit my elbow at high speed (even though the right-hand lane was open). I had flashing lights and a bright cycling jacket, so it's not like the driver didn't see me - they just didn't care, or they were actually trying to scare or hurt me.

I've recently been preoccupied with thefts, etc, so I haven't reported it yet, but I'm amazed that someone could hit another person with their vehicle, and not stop to see if they're okay. Fortunately I have a helmet-camera now (I recommend you all do so!), so it's not a matter of "he-said-she-said". The whole incident is recorded, including the license plate.

Okay, reading over some of the arguments here I feel like some people are confused.

I don't think anyone is advocating taking the lane when there's another option. I'm not going to take the lane if there's a 12' shoulder to ride in... You should always keep right if it's safe to do so. If it's not, and taking the lane is a more safe option, then do that.

  • Subtilian - 47 points - 3 years ago

I made this mistake once. It took two months to get my spine realigned. Not fun, kids.

  • Virindi_UO - 117 points - 3 years ago

Where I live I would never "take the lane". I'll just avoid dangerous roads or stick to the shoulder. "Take the lane" just puts myself into too much danger from getting hit by an eager and impatient driver who can't see me and floors his car into my lane to pass people who are slowly moving into "his" fast lane.

Watch this video to see a demonstration, even though only one car hits the bicyclist you can see two-three other cars almost do the same (floor it into the bicyclist's lane thinking it's clear before slamming on the brakes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7AVC1YCcO0

  • Trevski - 15 points - 3 years ago

Just pointing out that this is clearly intended to be used on 2-lane roadways, not single lane.

  • snakeob - 76 points - 3 years ago

This also means you have to line up behind and in a row with cars, not scootch up the side like a prick.

Edit:It is not Pedestrian Vs. Cyclist Vs. Motorists,
It's Human And Human And Human.

  • anonq - 111 points - 3 years ago

i always take the lane, pisses people off but whatever

  • bla8291 - 36 points - 3 years ago

Unfortunately some cops don't understand this. Don't let that stop you though! You're safety is more important than some ignorant cop. Just be sure to keep your state's bike law booklet with you.

For extra safety, use your lights during the day, and make sure they are bright enough to be seen in daylight from faraway. It gives drivers one less excuse if they still manage to hit you.

  • disruptivedurden - 7 points - 3 years ago

I live in an area with a lot of cyclists and roads that are one lane in each direction. What this poster suggests simply isn't possible. I try to go over into the opposite lane whenever I can despite this being illegal (as do many considerate motorists in my region.

Fortunately my region somewhat makes up for this by having some nice lanes for bikes on some of the busier state highways and many of the cities sponsoring bike paths.
